No difference in mine after the belts and water pump done.

I described mine as sounding a little tappetty but only from outside the car, you would barely know its running from the inside (which is crap really as I have milltek and you can barely hear it!)...maybe I should remove some sound proofing lol (only kidding).

Lovin' my GTI just now, Its going like a dream since the service and all the work.

Let the fun begin........Red Gti, full colour coding, DSG, Xenons, Winter pack, Lux pack, Highline, Sat Nav, Sunroof, Leather, Milltek, ABT rear valance, Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics....pescaras :-)

Any updates on whether these issues have been sorted?

Luke

I believe mine is finally sorted.

First off the cam belt, tensioner and backing plate(???) was changed, this didnt solve it so this was all removed so the water pump could be replaced.

Whilst this did improve things I still wasnt quite happy with it, so back it went, to have the timing chain and tensioner changed.  I think it was this that finally sorted it.  At this point the oil and filter were changed too.

As I have been without the car for 2 whole weeks (mk6 1.4 TSI as a courtsy car, nice motor good mpg and refined but it isnt a GTI) its difficult to say for sure but it does feel as though its running better and pulling harder.

I suppose that  if the timing chain was at fault then it would have affected the valve timing and in turn effect performance?

Luckily all this work plus 2 monza II's and 4 centre caps were replaced under warranty which ran out on monday!!!

The service I recieved from my local VW dealer was 1st class I cant fault it at all.

I guess mine will be the timing chain as well then, as I have already had the timing belt ,tensioner and water pump changed.  Plus the noise comes from that side of the engine.  Any idea on price?
.......any further with this please ?.

Hi all!!

I am new to the forum as only just got my MK5 (had 3 golfs previously) and had a bit of a mare with my recent purchase as you will read........

I have a 55 plate GTI, graphite blue, DSG, leather, 18'' monzas.  I believe it was the one previously owned by Spencer30 - based on the fact it had the same noise as he posted on this original thread, and his name was Spencer, lol!!!! Like Holepunch and Gene Hunt mine was fine when cold but as soon as up to running temp, sounded awful (just like a diesel) - however, performance was not affected.
Needless to say, when I took the car out to buy, it was cold so didn't notice the noise so much.  He did say that he had been to VW dealership but they, like others, said there was nothing wrong with it - how wrong they are!!!!
Bought the car at the end of May and took it to my local dealership early June - they had it for a couple of weeks (gave them all the literature from this thread to help as they too were stumped).  They changed the cambelt and waterpump on my request as thought it may be this, this did not solve it, at least it is done tho!!!!
After numerous tests - oil pressure, fuel pressure etc, they finally gave in and took advice and a visit from technicians from VW UK (Milton Keynes) - they were absolutely determined to fix the problem.
The result was the timing chain - exactly the same as Holepunches.  Got it back yesterday and sounds just like it should.  Only problem now is I am very skint, lol!!!
Gene Hunt - if yours is the same problem as mine was I hope you have a warranty as it cost £1200.......(this included cambelt and waterpump too).
Loving the car even more, it is awesome!!!!!!
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the post Lucas
Did you just have the chain replaced or did they change the tensioner as well?
Could you give a breakdown on prices off your invoice as well please.

Thanks

Hey,
I am away for few days just now, will post the invoice details when I get back.
They did change the chain and tensioners.
Cheers.
Glad the chain is covered by your warranty Gene Hunt.

Right now i know that everyone here says its normal, in fact i only came on here to find out what the hell was wrong with my car. I've recently purchased a nice 55 plate Golf Gti, 3 dr, Graphite blue, leather + DSG + Monzas. Now i think its great but the ticking from the engine while i'm sitting in traffic is doing my head in, it really does sound like a diesel, even if i rev it a bit when stationary the rattling gets noisier and faster....it's actually worse inside than outside the car.
Now common i cant beleive its meant to be like that!! Surely there's something i can do to cure it?????  :embarassed:

Im not sure what this sound is. But when i start my Golf i kinda have a rough sound that is similar to a diesel. I dont think theres too much problem with it. My Lady has the Audi A3 2.0 T so its basically the same car and does exactly the same.
