Back on topic....
I had an '05 Gti a few months back which sounded very clattery and diesel like on tickover, I was told it was normal but took it to my vw dealer and he found there was a problem with the timing chain housing and some other part that I can't remember!! all was replaced under extended warranty luckily as the work totalled over £1400
Get it checked out......

Thoughts on this anyone??......the diesel sound may not be "normal" then? :undecided:

Took mine to my local dealership and they agreed it didnt sound right, so its booked in for an investigation on wednesday.  I'll be sure to let you know the outsome.  I've got a feeling its going to be the fuel punp and/or timing chain!

What was the outcome Holepunch???

Hi Spencer30 I did het your PM but for some reason it wouldnt let me reply??????

Anyway, the car went into the dealer on wednesday for 3 new monza II's but in they end they changed their mind and only replaced 2.

As for the rattle they decided it was the cam belt backing plate (never heard of it) but due a them not having the correct parts and then recieving the wrong ones its still with them.

I hopfully pick it up tomorrow lunch, I'll scan and post a copy of reciept so you can see exactly what has been replaced.

Fingers crossed it will sorted but I'm not holding my breath.

Still havent got the car as the noise is still noticable even after replacing the cam belt and tensioner.  So on monday they going to remove this items to replace the waterpump.

Hi, yes i've been doing some research it could well be the water pump! not sure though. Our symptoms are exactly the same, when cold no rattle, when warm tick tick tick at idle. let me know if its the water pump!

Let me

I had the cam belt, tensioner and water pump changed abount 3k ago.  It made no difference to the noise I have.  IE.  When cold nice.  When warm, sh!te.

I think the noise comes from the other side of the block to the cam belt.  What do you think?

I agree, it does sound like its the other side of the engine from the cambelt area.  I'm not going to hold my breath over the new water pump solving the problem.

I believe mine is finally sorted.

First off the cam belt, tensioner and backing plate(???) was changed, this didnt solve it so this was all removed so the water pump could be replaced.

Whilst this did improve things I still wasnt quite happy with it, so back it went, to have the timing chain and tensioner changed.  I think it was this that finally sorted it.  At this point the oil and filter were changed too.

As I have been without the car for 2 whole weeks (mk6 1.4 TSI as a courtsy car, nice motor good mpg and refined but it isnt a GTI) its difficult to say for sure but it does feel as though its running better and pulling harder.

I suppose that  if the timing chain was at fault then it would have affected the valve timing and in turn effect performance?

Luckily all this work plus 2 monza II's and 4 centre caps were replaced under warranty which ran out on monday!!!

The service I recieved from my local VW dealer was 1st class I cant fault it at all.

I guess mine will be the timing chain as well then, as I have already had the timing belt ,tensioner and water pump changed.  Plus the noise comes from that side of the engine.  Any idea on price?

The dealership promised to post a photocopy of the warranty paperwork to me.  This should arrive early next week and when it does I’ll provide details of part numbers and prices.

I know a cambelt change involves separating the engine from the exhaust and drive shafts but I believe this timing chain is more accessible.

Cheers for that chaps, I've just booked the car in today for warranty work regarding the A/C which has gone a duff. I tried to get them to find the fault last time but this time I'll get them to sit in the car with the doors closed and play around with the clutch and ask them to check over the timing chain etc and hopefully they'll sort it. Out of interest which dealers have you used for these issues because some dealers seem to be turning down the option of paying their bills with obvious faults which some seem to class as a ball ache  where as others seem to do anything they can.

Yep picked that up from your post Mark. When I first met Darren at the airport I mentioned the engine sound, it is quite normal (sadly). I only mention the cambelt change just to see when it does get swapped out if there's a difference. I have no probs with mine at all. Just outside on idle it sounds tappitty, they all do I think, it's one dissappointing trait of the mkv.

So whatcha driving now? You still got the s3 kicking around too?
..............mine sounds a bit tappitty on tick over as well.Don't here it in the car tho .It's the axx engine code & is on an 05 plate.Just had cam belt & water pump done.
