We dont have one, so I thought I would start one............. with my thoughts on the olympics.
Up until now I have been pretty pi$$ed off that we have spent so much money on the games. However as they grow closer I find myself focusing on the actual events that will take place rather than the whole 'London' thing. Living up norf I dont really care what it brings to london (apart from lots of traffic misery ).
Recently though I have noticed the games have brought huge benifit to kids all over the country. This can only be a good thing as far as I am concerned.. Everyone is very quick to blame kids in adidas tracksuits for standing around on corners drinking/smoking/swearing etc etc. Yet everyone seems to be happy to offer a solution rather than a cure. My offer of a cure is to get kids more focused on sports! True its not for everyone... but many of the kids who had such focus generally looked after themselves much better than those that didnt. I suggest the olympics be made a small stepping stone for 'giving spotty teenagers something to do'.
Other than that... I have tickets  (bought for me rather than purchased.... but who is complaining).
Events I am looking forward to...
100m, 200m, & 400m, bits of the football (more so to watch the new batch of younger players coming through), swimming, and generally anything that has potential to get me on the edge of my seat.
It doesnt come round very often, and there is fcuk all you can do about it now its here... so I suggest you go ahead and enjoy the Olympics. This certainly helped me jump on the band wagon and get in the mood

I always look forward to the relays, and which doughnut is gonna drop the baton (hopefully not us this time...). Be nice if we can get some medals again. :nerd:
-
ill watch BOLT, i find its immense how quick a person can be. but if a bbc documentary is to be believed, hes not on form and blake and gay are.
not interested, in Olympic football or dancing or ping pong or any of that micky mouse stuff, track and field is mainly what i think olympics is about
-
Not really thought much about watching anything.
It's my mates house warming party Saturday night, he lives in Haringey, so I might go have a hung-over mooch round the Olympic village on Sunday.
-
Cycling is just up the road from me, might go and see Wiggo n Cav......most likley just go down the pub and watch from there
-
Over 250,000 volunteers over the entire time of the Para Olympics and Olympics...Think how much good that is doing for the 'city'. People have volunteered to sweep up rubbish for 6 hours a day just for a tracksuit and trainers.
I'd personally be watching every event possible if I wasn't working FFS! Esp the badminton and womens beach volley ball
-
From a practical perspective of someone who lives and works in London, it's already a nightmare.
But hey, there are only 8 million people living in London and probably only half of them are going to be affected by road closures, diversions, parking restrictions, traffic jams, clogged trains/tube/buses. And about 40 times that many will be watching around the world. So the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, right.
As for me, I'm not fussed much about sport really so I'm getting out of the way and leaving the area. I'll watch some of the opening ceremony, perhaps some tennis and maybe I can spare 10 seconds for the 100m sprint.
I agree about sport though, the Olympics is a great promotion of sports to the youth of Britain. Even if only 5% of the slackers get of their bum because of it, then it's good.
Sport is one way for kids to be inspired, fulfilled and find something they are good at, which is good no only for them but for those around them.
I used to play tennis and cycle when I was a teenager and along with music, that kept me plenty busy and out of trouble.

Can't wait to see the reception Bradley Wiggins gets after his brilliant success in the Tour de France.Definitely a contender for Sports Personality of The Year and an MBE to boot.Come on GB.
-
Typical british start to the football last night.... Cant see us competing for long in that!
-
I'm well up for the olympics. I always enjoy track and field events, looking forward to Yohan Blake smashing Usain Bolt in the 100m. (You heard it here first)
Going to events on Monday and Tuesday, looking forward to a hassle free journey on the tube! :lipsrsealed:
-
i was pleasantly surprised at the football...
england team GB should have won that match, and the support from the crowd was very promising.
roll on the opening tonight

-
Mr bean has made it so far tbh.
-
Just look at it this way, the French are announcing first as being in 2nd position like F1!
Danny Boyle will be knighted for sure, made me proud(ish) to be British.
-
Ok, i get it now.........

Time for NWO
-
That last bit of the opening ceremony with the fireworks, that was awesome, well the bit where i stepped out the house to see it and literally every person on the street walked out at the same time
Synchronised fireworks watching
-
Now i can smell the burning
-
In case you missed anything of the opening ceremony or you want to watch any of the sporting events, the BBC has launched a sports version of the iPlayer.
Everything will be on it and you'll be able to flick between upto 24 live streams and all the previous events.

Why the hell is it in french first. someone remind them we in britain!
It might something to do with the official languages of the Olympic Committee are French, English and then the native language of the host city.
I must say that compared to 2008 the London opening ceremony was a bit of a disappointment. Remember the 2008 drummers and their glowing drumsticks?

might be something to do with the budget?? what exactly were you expecting?
i thought it was excellent, much more impressed than I though it would be!

I snuck into the stadium last night!! I found a seat was un occupied and slipped into it!
Was an epic display, so so good. Glad I got in, although all of the people I lied to I am now probably going to hell!
-
whoever thought up that ceremony must of been off their tits

Danny Boyle,
More like Frankie Boyle!

For the Olympics, something more spectacular than that. Compare it to the Beijing 2008 (which is a natural thing to do) and you can see how poorly executed the London one was. We have so much culture and history to draw upon that it could have been amazing and on a much grander scale.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOijH0xinTE
It seems like we put on a panto and Beijing put on a Cirque du Soleil show.
It's the Olympics and we have spent so many billions already on it that we could have put on a better show than that.

I thought it was very good actually. We could never compete with Beijing, no one could to be honest, but of course people in this country just love to moan and have been ready for months to moan about how the opening ceremony was poor.
The only person that let us down imo was The Queen. She did not raise one smile all night, could not even be bothered to clap or smile when Great Britain entered the stadium and when she spoke to open the games she could of not sounded less bothered about it all.
As for the sport itself, I am loving it. Really good stuff. The online coverage is amazing too, but the only moan I will have is the very very poor coverage freeview viewers get. We only have BBC One , BBC Three and 301, but last night for over 2 hours both BBC Three and 301 had the same basketball match on while there was 5 other events going on!!
Hoping for some medals coming our way this week in the pool and rowing

Aye, for people who have Sky/Virgin ect. People with just normal freeview like me, only get BBC One, Three and 301 so when they show the same event for 2 hours when there was 6 events in total going on, it was pretty sh!te coverage from the BBC
-
watch it online
-
What about the sports version of iPlayer DubFan mentioned earlier?
Beijing cheated with CGI effects for the fireworks going off over the city, that's an instant fail and disqualification for best Olympic opening ceremony imo
-
I watch it online during the day, just at night when I am in bed watching it on the TV, be nice to have more choice then one event to watch! Hopefully the BBC will improve the coverage for freeview as it goes on though.
Going back to Beijing, lets not forget they used that young girl to sing, although she was not the real singer, it was another girl, but the Chinese thought she did not look cute enough , so brought in another girl!

quite right can't ruin it with a minger singing at the start, been loving the coverage so far, been watching loads of table tennis and badminton got free tickets to go watch ladies quarter final footie at hampden on friday from my daughters school, nice day out

I spent 6 hours watching the cycling road race yesterday.
Never watched cycling before, but seemed strange to me that Team GB just sat around 1 minute behind the leaders for the last 2 hours of the race and had no urge to go for it. Then only to blame the other riders for riding negative.
-
i watch bike riding quite a bit and what they did is normal, usually more people help you catch the pack but nobody helped,if they had chased them down they wouldn't have any puff left at the end for the sprinters just the way it goes sometimes

disagree... not to be difficult, i just do
i have just watched the beijing opening again and it was very good at the time but i think the London one was more inventive... china has a vast resource of people (and fireworks) and it was just typically 'chinese'.. lots of people in rows doing things in time etc... not really that different from any other olympic ceremony
the London 2012 Opening was completely different.. very inventive and humourous and Danny Boyle used his film direction superbly to mix with the live action... LED units in the audience to display different effects (did China have that... noop!) was also good so instead of wasted space and a sea of flash bulbs the whole stadium was utilised. olympic rings that were forged from molten steel and then raised into the air above the stadium, ancient england being transformed into the industrial revolution and then into the modern era and the invention of the interwebs, mr bean with the london philharmonic orchestra dreaming about chariots of fire, clouds that rained, a sky diving monarch, the flame being delivered by speedboat via being under a tower bridge with fireworks on it.. the most amazing and beautiful lighting ceremony with an incredible couldron... great music all the way through (granted... he should have left out paul mccartney)
so i am going to ask you again... just what were you expecting?
-
Scale, it just didn't have the drama and scale.
It felt too initmate and local compared to a massive stadium gig.
Don't get me wrong, I love intimate gigs but this is the Olympics and I was expecting Queen 1986 Wemble Stadium not Ed Sheeran at the Apollo, which is what I thought we got.
Take the Sir Tim Berners Lee moment. We could have utilised the LED units to display a massive montage of websites scolling around the stadium. Instead we had him standing there waving. He invented and gave to the world for free the web which is probably the most important invention the world has seen so far. It has revolutionised how people access information and knowledge. It was fitting to have it at the end but it could have been more grand and spectacular.

so a full sized house lifting over his head and his live tweet displaying around the stadium wasn't enough?!!

i know which one i would rather have been at...
i really don't get your drama and scale comment... there was more drama and scale in the olympic opening ceremony than you could shake a sh!tty stick at... what else would you have done or included?!
-
I was expecting something on the same or similar scale as the Beijing Opening ceremony. The narrative structure was interesting and I guess played to the strengths of Danny Boyle.
I wasn't comparing Queen 1986 to London 2012. The comparison was Queen 1986 stadium gig to Ed Sheeren live at the Hammersmith Apollo. The difference in scale and production value was what I was trying to point out. I guess you could interchange Queen with U2's Zooropa tour or even Take That's Progress concert. Beijing 2008 was a stadium gig and London 2012 was an intimate gig at the Appollo was my point.
The disappointment stems from that we missed an opportunity have a narrative of the history of the UK with the production value of Beijing 2008. This is scale

-
I have to say.. no it wasnt as good as beijing, but it was no bad show and definately something to be proud of. It was done in a very GB style way, and sometimes you need to understand the way the rest of the world views GB rather than GB trying to imitate China and others.
-
Difference is, if any of the performers in the Beijing opener stood out of line a bit or missed a note ect, they would of probably been taken out back and shot!

Here's an arcane Olympic question, when did the word Medal become a verb as in:
"He has a good chance of medalling in the 100m sprint" or " Team GB medalled in the World Championships in 2009"

Went to the football on Thursday at Old Traffor. Sh1te. Although how Senegal had 11 on the pitch at the end I'll never know.
Spent the weekend watching the BBC coverage and I'm really getting into beach volleyball. Not the blokes mind, that's rubbish.

Anyone else find it stupid how some of the swimmers walk to the side of the pool wearing big coats and huge headphones!
If it was me, I would much rather walk out and take in all the atmosphere.

not at all... the coats will probably be keeping them warm from their pre-race warm up or massage
the headphones will probably be noise cancelling headphones and i would imagine that they are listening to motivational soundtracks or spoken word or some kind of subtle hypnosis

exactly... its at the end when you would want to soak it all up, not before as this would most likely affect performance
-
I guess so, everyone is different. I know if it was me, would rather hear the crowd and soak it all up.
The hunt for a gold goes on though, Tom Daley and his partner f**king up two dives to lose out on a medal.
Hopefully the cycling mid week can provide some golds

Great show from the GB team to get that Bronze!! Silver would have been better.... but a great result anyway

It was about a dismount from the pummel horse. Basically the guy didn't dismount as well as he wanted to and lost points (which took them to 4th) but the judges took more points off him than they should have done for his error, so they complained and got the appeal and went back up to 2nd.

Not good news for the Singapore womens badminton team (I think it was them). Why would you purposely lose. Not good for the whole Olympic spirit and gamesmanship eh

Fan arrested after beer bottle thrown at start of 100m race
Footage of tonight's men's 100m final shows a green beer bottle landing on the track, yards behind Jamaican sprinter Yohan Blake, just before the starting pistol was fired.
It appears Dutch judo bronze medallist Edith Bosch - part of a posse of Netherlands athletes in the crowd - punched the drunk spectator who threw the bottle.
The culprit was then arrested.

I noticed that too and I think the producer must have as well as the camera never panned down low enough for another look.

Guess the intention was to advertise a beer brand rather than to hurt someone. (hope so at least) :undecided:
-
He pleaded not guilty and the case is going to be returning back to Thames magistrates court I believe, as usual one tw@t ruins it for the majority

I have literally lost all Olympic spirit.
Do you know how hard it is to be polite to the general public for 12hours a day while telling them that they cannot bring nail scissors/bottles of water & aerosols into the Olympic park........Will be my 8th 15+hr day in a tomorrow. Had enough, bring on Sunday.

My sister is there (army) and she's loving it. She's been doing the vip area of the beach volleyball and the triathlons. Also had vip tickets to several events and met a lot of 'stars'.
-
is it me or is the beach volleyball totally nonsense, they are not even attractive  tits like bee stings  and FFS it was only a so called sport for the yanks
-
Apparently, if the medal tally was based on per head of population for that country we would be top of the list!

Could be worse, you could be on three weeks summer leave right now, and watching it on telly. :lipsrsealed:
-
Not sure on womens boxing, but Nicola Adams, WOW! fantastic stuff!

I hear you. I made several conscious efforts to go looking for it on the red button. In some of the earlier rounds the totty wasn't that bad, (one of the Italians anyway) but on the whole extremely disappointing. However, as mentioned, the Dutch hockey team has some pretty fit women in it.
scarr89, hang on in there mate. :afro: When we went to the footy in Manchester I said to everyone to just imagine you're going through customs and treat it the same. Some people will just never get it.

what you have done, YOU, personally, have made the games happen... if it wasn't for YOU working your 12 hour shifts then the safety of the Olympic Park would have been compromised and God only knows what might have happened. So here is to YOU. Without YOU London 2012 would not have happened safely! We salute YOU. :afro:

clit licking now an Olympic demonstration sport...

the 4 x 100m last night was an awesome races!! New WR for the Jamaican team... will we ever see a team as fast ??
the highlight for me had to be mo farah and the 5k... one of the most exciting races I have ever seen. Was jumping and shouting at the screeen
-
One more shift for me tonight, and it is only a 5 hour one!
Hoping to get drawn out of the hat for a number of tickets we have for the closing ceremony!
Thanks for the quotes above guys! The public have been very welcoming and thankful, bar a few, which is great to hear and does keep me going to some extent! Especially when the Yanks try to give you a tip and want to hug you!!
I just feel that the guys that are doing all the work won't get much recognition, all of the high rankers will get the credit and MOST of the publicity is talking about how well the 'Army' are doing, where as there is 0000's of RAF and Navy personnel!

Unfortunately this is always how it goes. Even commentators only seem to mention Army personnel.
-
Anyone else watching the closing ceremony, hear the announcer say "Introducing his Royal Highness, Prince Henry of Wales"!!!!!!!
-
Thats because his name is Henry....
Full name Henry Charles Albert David Windsor

this

Hence the shocked expression, not the 'Huh' one.
The only person that calls him that is probably the Queen. Its just gonna confuse the f**k out of everyone! Nobody really knows him as Henry.
-
well he does sing
" god save grannie "

-
If ever there was a time for something to explode or go wrong. Now is the time.
Pride of Britain my arse.
Edit: I should add I'm watching this on Sky+ so quite behind the live stuff. So I shall quantify it by saying bunch of pre pubescent pukes on screen.
-
 @ slick
and if not, Paul McCartney will be back on to fook it up :lipsrsealed:
-
Mmm Russell Brand singing i am the walrus, that'll go down well with the scousers.
-
Just got the bit with Ed Sheeran in. I'm kinda impressed at this moment in time actually.
Get the dross out the way first and it seems to be getting better.
-
:undecided: u not had the spice girls then
-
Best bit of the night so far:
Boris Johnson dancing to the Spice Girls. Brilliant!!
-
Rio and JT to come on stage at the end to sing ebony and ivory?
-
spice girls and that whiny northern twit just destroyed everything. whole thing ruined!
-

Good flag erecting skills there, great way to hand over to Rio.
-
Got to the part with Eric, watched that and now it is bedtime, so will watch the rest tomorrow.
As a showcase it is pretty good really, bar only two musical groups.
No doubt someone will say they are ashamed to be British or similar short sighted comment.
-
Pffff, I'm proud to be British. No other country could put out the musical talent we have. Overall brilliant Olympics
-
Spectacular show, shame I couldn't afford the £3k for me and the wife to attend.
Bring on the Paralympics!
-
I still think the money of the closing ceremony should have been spent on writing "f**k YOU CHINA!" on the moon.
I miss turning on BBC1 and seeing a sport of some sort, I always love the olympics.
-
Anyone watching the athletes parade?
I'm pretty gutted that they are over now
Had an ace time working and being part of it...Just feel pretty deflated it is all over! Absolutely loved it, I reckon it has done a lot for the country!
-
Was a job well done!
