Title: RNS510 latest map
Post by: ScottA on 03 June 2012, 20:21
Hi all,

Without discussing anything to do with acquiring maps etc could someone please tell me what the latest map version is?

I am currently running 7692 and I cannot find anything newer, however I believe this is at least 6 months out of date, possibly longer. How often are map updates released?

Thanks,
Scott

Sorry, I think 7690 is the latest official release, 7692/3 seem to be custom ones with Speed camera databases already installed.

Yeah they show as POI and you have to activate them. Like you mine disappeared as well. Not sure if its a bug or something but I've been keeping my eye on it the last few months and this time they've not disappeared.
Is no great hassle to reactivate them again on the RNS once you know where the setting is.

The cams aren't that great to be honest as they only give you a visual display that they are coming up.

Unfortunately its not like the cams on the sat nav units Tom-Tom etc that play a sound so many yards before you approach them!!

Although I'm sure someone on this forum was working on that!!

i think that it must be a floor in the software. I will be going to specialist in a couple of weeks and i will ask him whether this is a common issue!

Hi

Any helpfull news yet.....

I was told by the guy i spoke to that it can be due to a number of reasons if its a retro fit.
Firmware being one main problem and also copied discs.

He didnt give any specifics really as he said different cars dont work for different reasons. sort of pot luck really to a certain extent.

Ya I did retrofit it my model is a version H with Hw - 64 and Sw- 4020 also I think my maps is 7690 .I Think when buying these units you are been told that they are new but there is no real way of telling if they came from the factory with that Fw-Sw version or if they have been updated to them versions which might be why people have the same unit versions but some have speed cams and some with out they don't all be the same

The database for the PersonalPOIs has in the database structure details about direction and speed for POIs. This indicates that at some point the system may be able to warn you about POIs (such as speed cameras) as you approach them.

At this time there seems to be no indication that this data structure is nothing more than future proofing or indeed that it was created by a third party (Continental - the manufacturers) and most likely is not supported by the VW / VAG firmware.

Also, as others have pointed out, some countries prohibit the use of anything that warns you about speed cameras, so VAG might be a little wary of adding the feature in to their cars!

I'll take another look and see if I get anywhere ....
Title: Re: RNS510 latest map
Post by: branchespark on 30 August 2012, 16:30
Here are the data options for each POI:

Currently this data table is empty. I will try and fill it with some real data, but don't hold out much hope, as I was unable to see any code within the firmware that actually made any calls to this table or the data within it.

Guys,

Be careful with FW 4120 or 5218 as I've managed to brick a ver H RNS510.

I knew it was possible to brick so it was a risk I knowingly took. I was on 4020 previously which was fine.

There's hope that someone will come up with a way of getting it working again but at the mo it doesn't look great.

I think I'll need a replacement motherboard which I can probably get for less than £200 so not the end of the world but £200 I'd rather have in my pocket

Yeah tried em all mate. If 4020 is working fine for you then just leave it is all I can say. I'm going to get the latest maps soon but don't know when I'll next be in Birmingham - I might be in town in a few weeks so I'll let you know if you want them

Well, there we go. I've been chatting to a few people around Europe who want me to send my RNS 510 to them for repair. They're not sure whether it can be repaired or not, or whether it will need a replacement motherboard. I have just ordered a replacement motherboard for £220 delivered from Poland. I'll try it and if that doesn't fix it then I'll send it back.

Hopefully it does and then I'll see what I can do with the old motherboard. I think it would be ok if you could flash it again. I've heard about de soldering the flash memory, using a tool to flash it (if I can find someone with one) and then soldering it again.

If I can do that and it works then I can sell it and hopefully recoup some of the £220.

If not then expensive lesson learnt. I just hope it comes with a decent firmware version or it doesn't f**k up again when I have to update the firmware to be able to run the latest maps!!!  :lipsrsealed:

Aye, that's the problem. Still, I could afford 3 of them for the factory fitted price

Even if they didn't notice it wasn't spec'd on the car, they'd notice the GPS antenna under the dash

I'm positive there was someone on here that took his retro fit RNS510 to the dealer and they swapped it for another one.

I know they updated my software on mine when I said my ipod was skipping* the first few seconds of a track even although mine was retro fitted.

*Turns out it was the way I had itunes set that was causing the skipping

Hmm probably could have given it a try but didn't fancy them ripping it out and trying to fit a new one, scratching the entire dash in the process. lol

Anyway, I just fit the new motherboard today. Took about 1 1/2 hours so not too bad, and that was without knowing what to do, taking the whole thing apart (and it comes into many pieces) and then working out how to fit it all back together. All fixed now, so need to see what I can do with the old motherboard, as there's a way of flashing them directly so could salvage it and sell it on.
