Title: bd Project Extra Low
Post by: Bespoke Division on 11 February 2011, 23:31
This one starts like this.

A friend of mine rang me before Christmas & offered me a Golf GTI Mk3 16v that his friend had & it didn't interest me as it was to expensive & just before the holiday period I could do without buying another car so I turned him down.
A couple of day before Christmas he rang back say that the mate was desperate for some money & that he would let it go cheap so I offered him something stupid
He rang back a few moments later & said that he would except it only if I came down now & paid for it.
As I was at work & a bit of distance from him I asked my friend if he would pay for it & I would come around the next day & pick it up off him & he agreed

The next day me & harry went down to pick it up & it was supposed to be in very good condition, starts & drives etc, well it wasn't. I had dents, scratches, flat tyre & it ran like a bag of sh!t
Me being a man of my word & my friend being completely useless with cars oh & the main thing was that he had already paid for it I paid him & got it bought back.

This is what it looked like.

I will need some body work doing but I will tackle that later, she's straight & rust free that's the main thing

With most of my cars they get stripped & this was no exception
This is how it went down.

Time for these to go in the bin

The original grill had to go for a de-badged one.

Whilst I was in the stripping mode I removed the alarm that didn't work.

As I was doing all the interior in black I could not leave the small bits that couldn't get  trim in white so I painted them black

I have a few more pictures which I will upload later of the alcantara

The black paint was out so I also painted the backs of the headlights black

I've got loads of pro audio power cable in the shed from my cars old install... Might have to copy you for the starter, battery and alternator setup, great idea.

Looks smart and love the work you're doing on the interior!... Top work, can't wait to see the finished result. :afro:

The upgrading of the cables helps loads for an install but can also help the running of the car in general.

That's why I've already got the cable, from my last install.

I've not long rewired the whole car but like for like.... the heavy duty's don't look too good and I intended to use something better, never thought of using what you have and i've got the cable sat in the shed doing nothing!... Might do mine on Friday!

Ok now that the lights were black from the back it was time to smoke the headlights, indicator, dummy & fog lamps.
I used bd's headlight tint film this is much darker than some other films out there
(we stock this at all times 12"x24" for £19.99 + p&p)

As all the lights were stripped out I added a 501 bulb holder with a orange smd bulb to each indicator which I wired up to the side lights which were also changed to orange.

I had to brand the golf   I realy love how this came out, just as I imagined.

Ok next it was time for coil-overs, I had used set laying around in the workshop which came off a mk3 that I broke up for parts.

Arch rolling   had to be done if this was going extra low.

The arches wore going to be rolled next so the plastic arches came off.

The fronts were also down.

The drivers side rear arch had a couple of scabs so this had to, I cleaned it up & primed
for now with a rattle can, I have plans to do the body work at later date.

The damage you can see on the drivers arch was there before we bought the car.

Now the the arches were rolled I sealed the inside of the flattened metal with some tiger seal.

It was time to put a set of wheels on it so for now I have borrowed a set of Lenso bsx's 9j x 16" rears (195/40) & 7.5j x 16" (195/40)  fronts from My Corrado Vr6 SLC which has been sitting for a little while now so these wont be missed

Is it not illegal to run a white plate on the rear  :undecided:
Title: Re: bd Project Extra Low
Post by: thai-wronghorse on 15 February 2011, 09:12
Very, not only is it an old bill puller but it's also a MOT failure.
Title: Re: bd Project Extra Low
Post by: Dec on 15 February 2011, 09:27
  who cares?

It's between the owner and the old bill what happens, likely the same as running pressed plates etc.. It's illegal but the person who owns the car has decided to tale the risk. Stretch is illegal depending on which copper you talk to, but loads of people do that. Just down to whether the individual is prepared to face the concequences in the event of being tugged.

Car looks good dude, can't say I would run a White rear plate, but smooth the front recess out and the front will look sweet

why run the front plate on the back with no front plate at all? :undecided:

The only reason I put this plate on was that I needed to get to a meet & I couldn't find the rear plate so I put the front on on the rear. This was better than running no back plate

Keep watching this, it might become become No1

OK on the b pillar you can remove the centre panel from behind by sliding it down wards. Then you can trim the panel & put it back together again.
The c panel is easy, you trim the panel & cut a slit in the seat belt area & fold it behind.
I will see if I have some detailed pictures & I can pm them to you

It has been a little while since I have up dated the build of project Extra LOW so I am going to go through with it quickly.

Next up was sound deadening, as it's a budget build I didn't go for any branded stuff.

With help of many friends on a friday after work late in to the night & then the next day about late afternoon more friends & the ones from the night before came down to give a hand if they could.

The plan was to finish the rest of the build off

Time for some wires to go down & audio to go.

Stinger rca have been used

Audio going into the car
Head unit Kenwood KDC-BT8044U
x2 Sets of Rockford fosgate P1652-s  componets 6 1/2"
Powered by Rockford fosgate R300-4 amp
x2 Subs 15" Pro plus worf51 1000w rms
Powered by x2 Amergeddon AR2000.1d class d mono block 1000w rms @ 1ohm
I have also added a Cache cloc+d line out put converter (this boost signal voltage from the headunit)

I had a Mulberry high line interior sitting in the workshop so that was going in to the car

When got the rear door cards out we found that some one previously had had cut & screwed 6"x9" speakers in the rear door cards
This wasn't going to stop us so a temporary fix had to be done for us to complete this car by the end of tomorrow.
So we had to cut the bottom section on the original cloth door cards trim this section in black alcantara which it was going to be any ways to mach the front door pockets & roof lining.

Front door cards where complete so these now went on with the lower pocket trimmed in black alcantara & the tweeter housing

I had by now made a false floor & laid it down & foamed under that as well.

Left this to go for that night.

This is amazing i love it!

I'm definately going to be keeping a close eye on the interior to see how you do it!

Quick question though, how did you get the sunroof handle on top of the fabric?

Thanks mate.

What we did is remove the the plastic handle from the sunroof, trimmed the sunroof & then refitted the plastic

After running the 15" pro plus for a little while it was time for a change so I desided to go for the 15" Rockford Fosgate punch P3's
These have a cleaner & clearer bass line compared to the pro pluses but are less powerful at only 500 rms each.

Thanks to Jaspreet for lending me that splitter to see what it would look like on my car, this is still sitting higher than before. I raised it a little to go to HOW & haven't lowered it back down

I do like the vr splitter but I like the gti one better.

Oh Jas bought my highline leather interior out of this car while he was at my workshop, he only came down for me to fix his car but he drove out that night with the leather fitted in car

I have sold the leather for another reason

Ok a little while ago I got hold of a smashed up S3   it sat in the workshop looking sorry for it self for a little while, I knew what I was going to do with & I knew what parts I didn't need, so slowly it has been stripped as a
few of you on here know as you've had quite a few parts off it.

Any way the plan is: out with the old

And in with the new

I know the 1.8t mk3 conversion has been done before so in true bd style we will be doing this conversion with a twist

Ok I have the bam 1.8 engine which has the k04 turbo, as standard it should of been running 225bhp I am shore we can we will be doing something about that

The mk3 2.0L 16V is a very good base to do the conversion in to, I will be using the 02a gearbox off the mk3 including all the mounts, sub frames & may be I will use that radiator to.

The little twist will be trying to run this with oe ecu, a/c climate control, the hole dash board - the stereo, steering column with Audi key, S3 recaro leather interior & as much of the audi loom as possible inc fuse box.

What would relay be an achievement is to use the oe key remote to lock, unlock & alarm the car

Now with an empty engine bay in the s3, it was time to remove a lot more yet.

Loom is connected up to everything behing the dash, it's all in the right place to see if we have missed anything & it will also help us when we go to wrap & tidy the loom up.

All the loom in the engine bay has been placed where it should go & all the components that will eventually need connecting are placed in the rough area where they will or need to go.

I know I will have problems using the S3 brake master cylinder & servo as there is minimum space between the engine & firewall.

S3 fuel pump connector

Mk3 fuel pump connector

I took the S3 ABS pump off & put the in the mk3 for now it is just sitting in the engine bay connected to the loom so that we have communication through diagnostics.

@ bd, how did ya get on when re lining the headlining? Just checked mine and it's all breaking up, bit sure whether it will make it harder?

It will make it harder & it could start to sag after a while as it will keep breaking up behind the new lining.
You will be better off removing the bits that are breaking & then re lining or by another one

A lot has gone on since last up date, the engine is back out again & loom has been re run behind the dash & through the chassis legs. What  MISSION that was

I had to get my snap on video scope to see in side the chassis leg, hiding the loom has taken up so much time you wont under stand & what makes it worse is that I am running a lot more in the engine bay than the mk3 set up.

I could of made my life easier & not used or got rid of a lot things like washer bottle sensor, heated washer jets & so on but that would of been to easy

The plug is different from the S3 one so this also had to be changed

I have removed the alternator + wire so that I can put a bigger one in for the I.C.E

We found an old inter cooler in the workshop from a 2009 audi A4 2.0 tdi which we fitted an up graded one to, so I know this one is mint.
Placed it under the mk3 slam pannel & it looks like it could work

All I need to do now is trim the front bumper reinforcer mount it & see if I can get some inter cooler pipes & silicone hoses to it  I some for my subaru which are blue which I will use on here for now & then get something a different colour later, may be white or black ?????

I didn't end up finishing the car for the blitz, I was tired & we had loads of customers that turned up Friday & Saturday.
We still went down to both shows & what a day we had, very tiring but awesome.

Oh well at least now I can finish it all before it comes out, next deadline has been set which is DC11
I have about a  month to complete the hole project.

List

Finish smooth engine bay
Inter cooler & piping
Exhaust
Body work ??? may be a repaint or a wrap ??? I dont know yet but I want to stay with arches.
I.C.E
That is it I think.

Next up date coming up later on today.

We have mocked it up & it looks like a very good but tight fit, bumper does look normal once fitted up.

Ok been a while again but been very bizy again & I am also trying to catch up some Zzzzz'z from loads of very late nights.

Not a lot has been done to the car it self but this is the progress so fare.

The scene is doing a vento front end conversion we wanted to be different & stick with the Mk3 looks & to also subtly add the S3 to it.
The front light where first & I don't think this has been ever done before.

I didn't get a pic of the standard Mk3 & S3 headlight but I am shore you seen one before.

Mk3 & S3 head lights stripped apart

Mk3 glass

S3 head light casing

As we found out whilst stripping one of the light was that the adjuster brackets where broken so I had a few spare lights lying around so these where stripped for the brackets & a few other lights were stripped to make these 2 headlight good.

Mk3 headlight casing

S3 oem HID ballast with d2s bulb connection

Mk3 head light loom, this is the one that is in side. We will not be using this any more.

Sorry I haven't got a pic of the S3 loom that we will be using & the black plug fits in the back of mk3 headlight casing

The Mk3 headlights did not have head light adjustment but the S3 ones do & as we have all the looms in place for this we thought it would be a good idea to make the headlights adjust with the motors oem style.

This is the mk3's headlight retainer which holds the inside of the headlight steady, this is also in just the right place where the motor needs to go.

This is the S3 one, sorry bad pic

Motor connection.

Now to take it to another level, the inside of the S3 head light was cut in half & we kept the project part & then the Mk3 headlight was cut to accommodate the newer projector & front fascia casing.

Hole cut & being trimmed to perfection

Projector casing & holder going in.

Now mounted inside the headlight

Keeping with the murdered look we had to paint the inside of the headlights & we wanted it a matt kind of a finish so we used some special we high temp paint that gave us a ultimate finish.

Subtle but the there

A few love bites from the tarmac

But I know all this will be kissed again

I have mixed & chosen this colour as our signiture under chassis parts paint colour, all I can say that this colour has a crazy amount of pearl in it

As we have this all stripped up it was time for it to get Power flexed up, If any of you want powerflex bushes at a very good price, drop me a pm & I will see what I can do. I keep most of the popular bushes in stock especially the golf range, try me

Now just awaiting for the rest of the components to be done, I will get round to it tomorrow.

I have lots & lots of new parts that will assist putting this bay back together very nicely.

Genuine inner & out c.v boots

Genuine bolts

Thanks, the other half is still the orignal Mk3 part of the light. This will still work as a normal main beem.

I love the amount of effort that went into the lamp, but..........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  :undecided:

The headlight beam pattern from the dipped beam (projector) may be scattered all over the place.

The OE projector generates the right beam pattern in the first place, but the mk3 glass is diffusing it afterwards. The original S3 lens would be clear I would look out for a clear, non diffused lens to replace it with.

It might be alright, but i'd be putting it on an MOT beam setter/tester just in case

Think it needs something to fill the sidelight too...

Looking amazing though. Proper quick progress.

I know where you are coming from & some one else mentioned that they do a clear lense for the Mk3's  :undecided:

I am not to bothered for now as I will be smoking the headlights so they go with the hole murdered look, I will obviously get the lights tested & set up by a mot station.
Many thanks for the heads up

The little round chamber next to the main one where the sidelight and high beam usually go.

Looks pretty empty.

Cracking progress, with the lights could you not buy some mk4 style mk3 lights and rob the clear glasss off of them? Then you'd be able to see all he work gone into them?
