When I was in Bristol I used to have a rather nice tandem garage, which was great for working on cars. Unfortunately when I move back to the Diamond Hell I couldn't stretch to a house in an acceptable location, with a garage. Absolute f*cking travesty, I know but there - you can't have everything you want.
As a result I've been working in an unfronted barn at my old folks place, with a container in it and some open space. This has all got pretty depressing and cold and sh*tty, too as the crud and dust on the yard blows into the barn and whirls around you - not good.
I've got the old chap's permission to sort it out into a sensible space to work in, with some provisos.
This is the barn as it's been for the past year:
First things first - DannyP is a completely amazing guy who I've worked with on this so far - we've done a lot of stuff together and I cannot thank him enough for helping me out with this - coming down from oop norf periodically to give things a kick up the arse is fantastic.
So, the barn It's got power in it (3-phase DannyP and I ran down to it) and there's water nearby and a drain area at the far end (tea facilities are important!). What we're going to do is divide it into two, so the workshop space I'll have will be 45'x30' - fronted in, with a full wall down the middle and doors across a bay to provide pedestrian and vehicle access. I've put a shout out locally and there's a couple of guys who want workshop/storage too who are coming in to share the space, which should give a nice nuclear community of goons to muck about with cars.
Danny and I went and cut down about 20 mature oak trees in some of the woodland on the farm:
Note two saws in the trunk - the tree trapped the first one, which then had to be cut out. Ooops!
These were then bought closer to the farm, where they were chopped up into planks and posts. The posts were for frames and the planks were to make foot-wide shiplap to board and weatherproof the front of the barn.
Meanwhile I laid a sleeper wall in the first bay:
Ironically I did that one and had to cover it in wetted cardboard to stop it going off too quick in the heat of the summer. The second bay I did the day after boxing day and had to add frost-proofer to the mix and cover it to protect it from the worst of the cold.
Over the past few days we've gone right into it. First we closed in the simple bay, using complete planks. You can see not only is there the sleeper wall to keep out drafts, there's also a heavy-duty membrane behind the boards:
Then we closed in the end bay, which was a touch more complex, as we didn't have any whole-lengths and there was a step at the end, where the concrete wall is:
Then we needed to start the doors for the middle bay. These needed a top to the frame, so we scrounged an old bit of C-section from a barn that was taken down some years back. It was transported using the nearest available load-bearing vehicle:
Thankfully there were a pair of trailer silage doors that were obsolete as we no longer make silage. These had the steel chopped out of the middle of them and were cut down to make a 5' door and a 10' door. The hinges were stepped out on the doors and the frames, so the doors will be able to be opened 180 degrees once finished. At close of play we'd got the big frame finished:
and then hung, with the hinges welded to the barn frame:
The funniest moment was seeing whether the New Holland engine crane would fit in the new door. We hadn't measured it, as it wasn't around when we were setting the door frame:
Next up is to re-organise the containers in the barn (there are two) - they need swapping round, then laying a sleeper wall across the barn and putting studwork across the WHOLE frame, which is going to be another huge mission! Once it's sealed we need to insulate and wire the unit up for light and power and get a sink into it!
It's gonna be a busy few months ahead of us but as Danny said 'given what we've acheived in the cold and wet, what the hell are we going to be able to do in a nice, dry, warm unit?! I guess we'll see once the unit's nice and dry and warm!

DH and DannyP - this is brilliant! :afro:

You kept that quiet, that's fantastic work, hats off to you....
I had the same problem as you when we moved recently. I'm trying to see what my options are. I have a big, huge waste of a drive, I want a garage but not sure i'd get planning, next best thing will be buiding myself a car port which would be better than nothing.
How far is your folks place from where you live?
-
How far is your folks place from where you live?
10 blasted miles, which is a bit tiresome, but hey.
DH and DannyP - this is brilliant!
Nah what would have been brilliant would have been hydraulic failure in front of the barn at this point:

10 miles, could be worse... Ah well, the rate you're going you could set it up as a second home and stay there from time to time.
As far as hydraulic failure goes, it depends who's under the car!

did you see what I did there?

You are one of luckiest people ive met i only have a double garage (full of sh!t) and a fenced in space next to it with my mk2... You could bloody live in that and still have room to tinker the cars..
My old mans a farmer.. he wears a farmers hat hat hat.. he wears gord blimey trousers.. and lives in a council flat flat flat..
Love it mate your doing a sweet job..
-
Nice one DH, respect for the hard work there. I'm lucky to be able to use my work and store all my sh!t and work up there whenever and borrow the work van whenever. I do want my own garage and workspace or a shared workshop with a few friends, but the setup wouldn't be as good as it is now and it wouldn't be as FREE as it is now :D
Would love to check it out and tinker with my car, but I know your not Mk3 friendly and judging by that picture, I'll pass (and the the YouTube vids of your Mk3's :( )
-
good work gents, gutted i couldnt make it over to assist
-
Looks good. Is the Rado lurking in there somewhere?
Nick
-
DH and Danny massive respect to you both, you have done a grand job, looking forward to the end result. I wish i had a garage, going to hunt myself a farm that doesnt use his barn
-
Really good job that boys well done.3 phase is a must for a decent compressor and welding plant.
Have you just bumped your old mans rates up though?
-
Got any of that green oak left?
-
Got any of that green oak left?
yeah i want some for when i build my car port.
-
Looks good. Is the Rado lurking in there somewhere?
Yep, in the driest, cleanest bit!
Got any of that green oak left?
Apparently we can harvest five cubic metres of the stuff without a permit, per quarter
But the answer is no - we'll probably need more to close off the doors yet.
-
Well done on the making of a good Man Hide away :afro:
-
proper job mate!!! love it!! all i got is a drive way wide enough for a gokart!!!
-
Well done on the making of a good Man Hide away.
We will be conducting some James May-style Man-Lab experiments from it.

Well if you ever fell anymore I would definitely be interested in buying some off ya!

Epic build
Wish I was closer
For now I'll have to carry on working a small single garage with barely enough room to fart in.

Brilliant. Setup a webcam steam for us to have a giggle / call the ambulance / sell to You've been framed
-
as above i bet there were many f**k ups to get just this far
-
Kudos to you Thomas, et al.
What you have there is your very own "Manlab"
Tidy.

Managed to get a few shots in the fading light today after I cup-brushed back the main door frame and red-oxide painted it:
I then cleared a load of space by the container so I will be able to manhandle the pair of them and swap them over tomorrow, hopefully.
Once that's done the second door will be hung and the sleeper wall for the front to back wall laid.
-
I spy the pikey saw bench
-
i have just gotta say that them boards on the left are looking decidedly tatty, couldnt you trim them up a bit?
makes it look like some carrot crunchers knocked it up out of a few pallets
-
I will be clipping them off soon, don't worry.
I'm going to lock this now. Someone can clear up in due course.
-
Gotta say DH, its bigger than expected
But should be sweet when finished, let me know when theres another work party weekend - i WILL attend one of them :afro:
-
Its unlocked again! Yay
-
Good work there Danny & DH. Makes me ever so slightly jealous...
-
I think it's rubbish and I wouldn't want anything like that at all........................................................
Ok, thats a lie  Top work fellas, I aren't jealous at all
-
Grabbed another few hours out there today.
When I got out there I found that Mat, who's one of the sharers hadn't read my message properly and had been there sorting stuff for a couple of hours already - result!
You can see the containers on the left hand side of this photo.
Well they're the wrong way around and the one on the right hand side is bridging the bay where we're shutting off the barn, so I used the skid-steer loader to shove the front of the one on the left further to the left, then put the chain on the one on the right and dragged it out in front of the barn and then used the skid steer to pull the one on the left across the barn.
Once that was positioned we then used the skid-steer to shove the blue one back in, now on the left. This whole process also meant we had to hoick all the clutter out from around the containers and some considerable area around them. This then all had to go back in, stacked significantly neater than previously. It also meant the power had to be disconnected from my green container, but that won't be too much of a biggie to re-connect.
Next steps - steel uprights in to split down the span before we march across it with a block sleeper wall.
-
There has always been somthing about wiring up a giant metal box that you stand in that has never really appealed to me

Is the earth strap called a steel framed barn by any chance?

how many cars can you practically fit in this ??
-
Some.
-
Can you fix my car please?
BTW i'm not going to pay you or make tea
-
Looking good DH, i can remember when i saw it and thought you were a lucky sod for having this much room to work in

That place is awesome! I would love a place like that! I really like the oak across the front not only a nice place to work in but also looks the bollocks!

You should try doing anything with my parents.
You're aware of the term 'walking in treacle'?
Let's just say this whole thing is a mixed blessing.

if you dont mind me asking do they charge you for the space ??

Thers plenty more space around this aswell, this is just a barn, albeit most of our dream places to have 'round the back of the house'. One of the many advantages of living in farmer land is space, one disadvantage is cow sh!t on the road everywhere..
-
another big advantage is the three phase it makes kit so much cheepr and better value it really pisses me off.
My 450A mig 3ys old cost me £250 cheep as hell cos it's 3phase only. you can get anythign near that power and quality for that singel phase and 3ph welders not only have more grunt, higher duity cycels they weld nicer as the current is smoother.
once you look at tigs £500-1000 with 3phase buys you without much looking a 2nd hand industrial AC/DC tig with plenty of toys and all the power you chould want, singel phase it buys you a gutless pice of chineese sh!t with a useless warranty.
compressors are big and cheep and lathes and mills go for scrap money
unfortunatly for TC he's on the IOW as if he was much closer i would have finished that barn for him by now, however fortunatly for him he is on the IOW as i would have nested in that barn by now.
-

Quite how this would be a bad thing I'm not sure
if you dont mind me asking do they charge you for the space ??
I normally do a day or two marketing work/advertising/etc etc and IT support per month. The sort of thing we'd charge £3-400 per month for in work.
-
oh thats cool..

Was out at the weekend - successfully scavenged steels for the uprights on the front to back wall, but ran out of oxygen cutting them to size and removing brackets from them.
Cut down the hinges for the pedestrian door.
Wired the green container back in and bonded it back down to a stanchion.
Annoyingly, with all this rain, the worst aspect of this barn has come out - there is a section of the rear wall that weeps. Trying to figure out what to do about this - the ideal is to dig out the earth round the back and put a land-drain in, but there's services under the ground, so some alternative may need to be sorted, as a damp workshop is not a good workshop.

Is this only at ground level?
-
Is this only at ground level?
I think so, yes.

Forgot to ask, what type of wall is it... breezeblock or brick?.... Also what is the floor made from, concrete? What type of ground is on the outside of this wall?
It's hard to make suggestions without seeing it but weeping through at ground level suggests a poor join between the wall and the floor. If that's the case and depending on the floor type and ground outside, you could try the following:
Mix up some mortar with some Waterproof And Retarder solution - Something like THIS (http://www.wickes.co.uk/Waterproof-And-Retarder/invt/240146)
Build up the area along the bottom of the wall at an angle on both sides by a couple of inches if that makes sense.
.
-
You've missed a major factor here - there's a depth of soil/spoil behind the back of the wall.
This is what's becoming waterlogged and then it's seeping through the blockwork. It does appear to be on a specific layer, but that's probably the point above the concrete floor and before there are any further joints.
This is why I said a land-drain might be necessary, but I need to understand where the water and main elastrickery supply to the buildings runs before we dig.
-
new piccies ??
-
Nah - need to hang the second door and then get the uprights in and then maybe some fresh pictures. The next real noticeable difference will be when the wall is up and some of the bloody insulation is on the walls, not on the floor!!
-
what colour it going inside ??
-

What?!

you painting the inside ??

Are you a bird?

It was just a suggestion.. thought pink was your colour no ?? :smug:

My bad, was multi-tasking (work)
hmm, take a photo next time. I couldn't visualise the problem very well (and didn't take in what I read)
Is the concrete base larger than the building at the back? Wondered if you could dig (shovel) out the back a tiny bit and build a short wall behind the blockwork with some watertight render for backup, or am I totally misunderstanding the problem? What exactly is under this soil?
-
Just pva the inside wall and then dry line over it before you shank on the kingspan or whatever your using.
-
i think a more likely solution is going to be. get digger, dig sh!t out
9" concrete hollow blocks arn't exactly water proof water will seep through them at amazing speed given the chance
-

I was thinking proper bricks but alas I'm sure the best opinions can can only come from someone who has seen the problem first hand.
-
That was my thoughts, Danny, but apparently the main feed for the electricity and water go up there, so it'd need to be done very carefully!!
At the end of the day, the only solution is to provide a much easier way for the water to get out - land drains against the wall, put in with a mini digger, with the end of the drain coming out in the drain pit at the near end of the barn. Removing the spoil to sufficient depth is a slightly dodgy solution as the next barn's only about 8' away and if we cause subsidence in that I suspect there will be proper upset! If we just dig the spoil away from the barn, it'll slump back down pretty quickly, as it's clay.
PVA is definitely NOT the solution here!
-
amored cabel is quite forgiveing of minidigger. if you have a ditching bucket and a small machene. plastic water pipes are ok to dig upto as well the ones that can be a real pith are steel galv water pipes
the clay is likely expaning why its chooseing to come through the wall at leas

When were the cables put in? If they were fairly new they should have tape a good ft above with a sand blind under.

hahahhahhahahahahhahahahhahahahha ROFL pissing self
IT'S ON A FARM, THEY WILL HAVE BEEN PUT THERE BY A FARMER ( OR WORSE )
you really think any tape or sand will have been anywhere near them at any point.
last time i looked for tape digging near wires on a farm all the lights went out and i had a holy bucket
-
Cables went in in 1977.
On a farm, but were installed as party of a large project, but it would have been to 1979 standards and will have had 30 years of aging on them.
-
going to have to be the gently gently approach and no toothed buckets

Bucket and spade. :lipsrsealed:

Only a suggestion :undecided:
-
Only a suggestion :undecided:
soz but i work with farmers to much and know what there like tape would require buying the best you chould ever hope for is for it to be subsituted for bailertwine and old bags as that would be hanging around. round here they have time machens as well, as they keep on converting all these old barns that wern't there into cottages that have allways been there. as for regs they don't matter because it's allways been there.
tho at the particular place in question there is a possoblity it was done to the standards of the time.
-
tho at the particular place in question there is a possoblity it was done to the standards of the time.
Because it wasn't done by farmers, it was done by industrial contractors on that occasion!
It's about the only bit that ever was, mind!
-
Industrial contractors working of a Farm?
Probably worse than the farmers! And back in 1979 you only did what you had to. If you could get away with doing feck all, you did feck all.

There are a few remedial tanking solutions available,
http://www.rentokil.co.uk/files/file_293627.pdf (http://www.rentokil.co.uk/files/file_293627.pdf)
http://www.safeguardeurope.com/applications/basement_waterproofing.php (http://www.safeguardeurope.com/applications/basement_waterproofing.php)
A drained cavity may also be possible, but as you say the most effective and inexpensive solution is to stop the water coming throught the wall in the first place, if you can get access to the outside of the wall...
-
Tanking is OTT,
loads of potential solutions but really getting the water away from the wall is probs the best, failing the a heavy menbrane up the back side, or splatter some waterproof render over it.
or waterproof render the inside but thats not optimal as it'll mean the wall is allways wet and the water will allways be looking for a way in
-
awesome

In this photo you can see the fall of the land and how the barn is sort of 'dug in' at the back:
Excuse the atmospherics - taken late evening tonight
This is where it's leaking:
It appears to be between an older layer of blocks and a new one.
Part of the solution may be to make sure the guttering is OK along the back wall and the wall on the other barn!
Here's a photo to upset Nick a bit - it will rise again (eventually):
This is the container in its new position, as there were demands for more photos.
This evening I mostly removed this from the SJ:
It's an alarm loom in the middle of all that tat. It still starts and runs and I'm generally quite pleased about that.
Unfortunately it seems to have rotted out under the seats, so I have quite a lot of welding to do to make this area good before we go too much further:
The seam at the back of the seating area is clear in this photo - this is completely rotted out:

Right. Here's my two penneth.*
From the pics clearly water running downhill is hitting the back and sides of the barn.
Would it not be feasible to ensure a gap of say two-three feet between the barn walls and the soil banks on the three sides.
Build up single skin concrete retaining walls against the soil bank on the three sides. Place suitably sloped guttering at the he bases of said walls to take the rainwater away from the barn sides to the nearest drain.
You cannot stop the water - Kanute stylee - only divert it around.
Pikey way:
Dig the soil walls back a few feet on the back and sides. Dig a big trench with a digger to divert the water around the sides onto the concrete in front/drain.
* I is NOT a farmer  But had a similar problem in the Scouts when pitching camp on a slope in heavy rain.
-
It's actually mostly just the back wall - the photo's deceptive as to how far the level comes forward.
Sorting the guttering and digging away a bit of soil at the back may be sufficient. It'll be a bit trial an error to see what works without spending too much on the problem!
-
Double Decker bus? Care to explain?
-
They all have to live somewhere.
The barn in the middle contains further omnibus-based 'delights'.
Bus enthusiasts are kinda like VW enthusiasts, only much, much sadder.

Yes, poor Magnum, in a nice, dry corner of the barn not having miles rolled on, or being driven about on salt-dusted roads.

Lighting sorted in the two main bays tonight - end bay didn't have any lighting, now does for added usefulness.

Had a major blast through at the weekend, creating masses of space using the ancient, mysterious art of 'stacking' (something my brother knows nothing of).

Next up is to bolt up the shelving units on Wednesday evening for further adventures in 'stacking' to create yet more space.
-
Woh! loads of space... if you were near me I'd be kissing your ass right now!
-
you got to build the doors ?? space looks awesome loads of room..
-
Looks like you are going to have a really good set up when its all done, good work.
-
you got to build the doors ?? space looks awesome loads of room..
The main frames are built and hung, they need extending to the floor, the big one needs bracing and then they need sheeting in. We will be adding skirting around the edges to keep draughts to a minimum.
-
You talk like a robot dh
-
That's because we are in a rush, because we are off to have our firmware upgraded.
-
Better camera, better impression of space:

Built up the racking in the middle of the barn and cleared out some tat from the container, improving the make-shift tea station this evening.
-
even with 3 cars in there there is a shed load of room, pardon the pun
whats next a full working workshop lift

whats next a full working workshop lift
Funny you should mention it.....
Really need four-poster and two-poster lifts though, for different jobs.

Belongs to one of the guys the barn is shared with.
It's excused for being a Saxo on the basis it's set for the 750MC Stock Hatch series.
Proper.
I'm sure the final two pieces of the jigsaw of vehicles due into the barn will receive a warmer reception from certain folks on here.
The sad c*nts.

Good solid day of progress today.
One of the other guys drilled out and bolted down the bases of the two stanchions while I cut and welded in a diagonal brace to the large door, to stop it sagging.
Once the stanchions were bolted down we fired into the front-to-back sleeper wall:
Which is now done, so the container needs dragging away from the wall so the stud-wall can be put up.
Next bits are the bottoms to the doors, which have been cut for a while and then the panelling in of the door.
-
Diagonal brace put in at the weekend. Lower sections welded in this evening. It's ready to be covered in.

Block-work appears to have dried nicely. Blind men may come to admire it and be impressed.
-
Looking good mate not long till it's all done
-
And then it will be summer and you will want everything wide open
-
Yes, but that's fine - the doors can be wide open, but then they can be shut up when we leave, leaving everything secure and dry and much less dusty.

The ramp is 3-phase, yes.
You can't move in, but there is a lovely luxury self-catering unit a few hundred meters away if you want to stay in this delightful location at any point.
The barn has a substantial power cable in to it so we can pretty much run what we want on 415V.
Got given a deadline for getting it closed in this evening - 12th July. More materials will be arriving before too long to get it sorted.

-
looking good mate how many bays is it going to have ??
-
There's about £2 worth of pallet there.
Sorry.
:nerd:
-
It's three of six 15' bays and they're 30' deep.
One of the guys tipped up with a car cover that should vaguely fit the Corrado last weekend.
-
Have you not finished this yet!?
This is going to be great for you this winter.... I expect to see all sorts of interesting developments coming out of those big doors next year.
-
Finally getting moving again, after a few weeks of slackness.
I had a bit of a tidy up last week and then gobbed this together to help with the tidying up (bloke tidying up IS burning stuff, isn't it?)
Then Mike (who recently registered on here) and I had a session on Sunday and started covering in the big door frame. Prior to this I had also scurfed back the door frame and red-oxided the hell out of it, too - so some undocumented and tedious progress.
It's ply, coach-bolted in place on the outside of the frame through the planking. This frame with outside border is going to have tongue and groove screwed into the inside of the frame (don't ask, odd parental cosmetic request). As such it should be good and solid. With a fair wind on Thursday evening we might even get the big door finished and the smaller one done, too. Depends on how much drilling gets done - there's a LOT of drilling needed to secure the panels!
-
Looks sweet mate.. what you gona use to stop the wind coming under the doors ??
-
Looks sweet mate.. what you gona use to stop the wind coming under the doors ??
Dead bodies?
Looking good MR Hell, should be on track for completion before winter then?
-
Looks sweet mate.. what you gona use to stop the wind coming under the doors ??
Rubber skirting - old conveyor belts or similar - will be rivetted all round the doors. This is going to make a huge difference! We also have a sheet to replace half a missing one on the end of the barn. I want to get it as draft-proof as possible, just to keep the dust down inside.
-
Keep us updated need more pics
-
your really on a weather proof mission, comapred to what we swapped the corrado and the golf engines in
-
More done today:
It's the drilling wot takes the time!
Just need to cut down the last bits for the top of the doors and then fit the tongue and groove in the middle (no rush). More importantly - get the top section closed in.
Yes. Weather-proof is definitely an aim and then it'll be sink plumbing, fridge etc and the ramp bolted in and powered.
-
(http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/198779_10150758225420354_882200353_20265148_810908_n.jpg)
This attractive piece of work, from last Thursday is the top locking mechanism for the large door. It's box section, with a captive bolt fitted into the end, with a rotating tubular 'cup' on the end of it, with a handle.
This will slide up and down and lock in the up position, by rotating the handle around, securing the door.
It look a couple of hours to do the work shown above. It'll probably suck up another couple of hours mounting it to the door, but it's necessary before the doors are finished, because at the moment the top of the main door pulls out quite easily when the bottom is secured - not good for security!(http://)
-
Ooooo get you and your fabrication skills. Nearly ready for the long winter ahead then.
-
This is the Isle of Wight.
There is no long winter here, just a slightly less summery period, when we sometimes have snow.
-
Steady progress - locking mechanism at top of large door and halfway through fitting the tongue and groove to the door.

Dragging the container out this afternoon, after fettling a Sportrak for ages.
I put it on wooden bearers, so it would drag easier
(http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/296824_10150779946755354_882200353_20530316_6873080_n.jpg)
Then I had a bit of an issue. I had to rotate it through 90 degrees, to push it into another barn. This is where things got tricky. This is the only way up to the top area of the farm. This is where things got a bit tricky, because it got a bit stuck on a drop - as I pushed it further out, it put more pressure on what was on the ground, until I couldn't shove it any more. Then some of what's stored there came back:

Thankfully it's possible to drive around, so I did that and dragged the sucker into the hole:

Big hole back in the workshop.

Sadly now nearly filled because we have something of a glut in vehicles at the moment.....
Oh and because of all the stuff in the container is now where a car would be.
So, lots more to do now, but dead chuffed it's closed in and now has lots more space.

Wild wild west

Big day today. Marched insulation and boarding all across the partition wall:
Then put an electrical ring down the back wall of the unit, so there are five double sockets down there now.
This includes a socket in the corner where the sink is. I fitted the sink unit to the wall on Thursday evening, replaced the terminal fitting with a screw-to-the-wall one as well. I also put together the waste, out of the wall - working hand wash point!
The electric ring ends in a double socket above a unit next to the sink. One plugs in the fridge and the other the kettle. Working tea station ahoy!!
We also pulled the vehicles out of the unit and fixed up shelving units and filled them with all of the clutter out of the container.
-
Looks sweet mate.. Are you going to insulate the roof ??
-
about time

Ooops.
That turned into a bit of a late one.
Mike and I set about finishing the big door's tongue and groove. He finished at about 21:30 when we'd done the big door. I think mosied on, did the small door and then painted both.
Bish bosh:

Well I would believe you but I suppose it depends on how much you have planned.. Me, I would be happy as a pig in sh*t with what you've got so far to be honest.
-
Let's see.
Fit and wire ramp in.
Acquire and wire in pillar drill.
Move distribution board so it's inside the unit
Put in additional electric power points, including 16A plugs for welder etc
Put in lighting circuits and appropriate light units
Fit in 200L compressor and put air-line around unit
Fit up studwork, insulate and board out front bays and inside of doors
Board remaining (small) gaps at rear of barn
Insulate end and rear walls
Insulate and board roof (no rush on that one!!)
Excavate soil from behind back wall, put in land-drain to stop water coming across the floor when it rains!
Go collect more shelving from a mate who has lots sitting about (WIN!)
Put in mezzanine deck over half one of the bays, for dry storage (steels are already out front).
Do lots of projects.
-
^^^ Nearly done then!
Yeah my no comparison man shed was blessed with free racking a shelving, nice when that happens.
So we may be in for some interesting reads from you next year? :lipsrsealed:
-
out of intrest dose the pikey saw bench still exist ?
think the miller 475 and water cooler may be up for a road trip when it comes to the mez deck

Sorted the front three lights tonight. I got some skip-shopped sodium units from a mate of mine. They have 150W bulbs, so the three of them use 450W vs the 1000W total pair of halogens I'd nailed up previously. When we powered them up it was 'is that it?' for about five minutes or so, then they came in properly. It's a weird light to work under, but we have sufficient units that there are far fewer shadows now. With the second pair to go in further back it should make the whole barn really well lit and much nicer to work in when it's dark.
Here's the first three:
Nick asked on Faceplant whether it was a Mini - yes - we have a Saxo from Basra and a Mini from Mike - the guys sharing the unit.
Land Rover is now sold. Leaves Saturday after this. Much relief. Just need to get shot of the bus now.
-
Excellent progress mate, will hopefully get to have a good look out there on Friday
-
well the deal still stands for the bus, get it up and running and then it can be added to the 2 peugeots I got coming to stay
-
Moving on from Vauxhalls now are you Chuff?.... :lipsrsealed:
-
no, i  getting some loan cars for a while
-
Vauxhalls and pugs in the same chat vw thread
Nice progress... Not looking as roomy as it once did, there seems to be a lot vehicles in there now.
-
Nice work DH. If you can be arsed, slap some white paint on as much of the walls as you an be bothered with. You'll be amazed at how much more light will bounce around.
-
Cloud, silver lining etc
All five sodium lights are now in, wired in properly, although I need to tidy the wiring on the purlins.
Mike and I also bolted up some Meccano tonight. Now it just needs levelling up, bolting down and connecting up to the 3-phase supply.
Best of all, the scrap around the unit is starting to get gathered up and space is starting to appear.
-
Rado, you keeping it?
-
Yup.
It's dry. It's not losing any value. Why would I sell it?
-
That poor rado.

Its time will come.

Wondered when you'd be starting on the ramps, you're going to have such an ace winter. I'm too jealous for words.
-
Yup.
It's dry. It's not losing any value. Why would I sell it?
Fair enough.
Well if it was just going to sit there forever then thought as most normal people do you might want to sell it.
Obviously it's not; you don't want to.
-
Forgive me if I've missed it, but have you got any form of heating in there? If so what?
I'd love a space like that....really jealous

Someone's bound to say it...
Wouldn't it be a shame if it came down and squashed the Citroen.
-
I want that ramp................
After its crushed the Citroen.
-
Was out there earlier.
Disappointingly the Golf had not sunk down onto the Saxo.
We also finished the internal frame of one of the front bays and boarded it in, as well as closing in a hole in the concrete cement on the end wall.
-
Did you cure the damp comming through the rear wall?

Good question, I forgot about that, can't be bothered to look back.
-
Good question, I forgot about that, can't be bothered to look back.
It's not doing it at the moment. If it starts, the excavator is about and will be used to insert some land drain tubing in the soil out the back of the barn, to take the excess water away.

Hopefully it will stay that way then.. Last I remember on the matter was concern over where the main cables were that power the building.

Lucky to have a barn to convert but you have to admit the rest is down to graft.

finding the main power cabel wouldn't exactly be a bad thing in itself, it would probaly find itself getting rerouted slightly

yeah thats what i ment, lucky to have the space/time/money to be able to do that.

Used the jacking beam on the ramp for the first time this evening.
Needed about 250ml of oil added to it and thrown across the floor to make it work.
What an epic bit of kit.
Both front bays are now insulated and boarded out.
Liking the 'paint the walls white' idea.

Painting the walls white will be a massive help! It will throw the light right around the room, just take a bit of time every now and then to wash them all down so paint with a gloss. In my work workshop the walls and ceiling are painted bright white, not that you can tell cos of grinding dust - but I cant imagine how dingy it would be without them painted.

Big day out for Wellow Racing yesterday.
Out to the barn for 07:30, where we loaded up.
09:00 boat
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v627/diamondhell/1326530270196.jpg)
Southampton at 10:00
Down to Newton Abbot, where we dropped off the bus at Futbus's place:
Which is where Jord's camper is at the moment. You can see the side of it through the front of the red van in the photo. Just.
Great story from Futbus about the yellow van - apparently it was stolen on the way to him - the guy who was paid to transport it from North Yorkshire to Devon got bored of towing it around Leeds and sold it to someone for £500, who then sold it for £1500, who (I think) then posted about it on a VW forum, from where it was promptly recovered. Apparently this delivery driver has done this lots of times around the UK, on one occasion driving a 1954 flatbed lorry about 10 miles up the road before getting bored and selling that.
Then we went and collected a new project, which was residing past Penzance. This was so far past Penzance, it made sense to take a 10 minute detour to here:
(Lands End). That was at 17:12
We then got on it and made some serious time to get back to Red Funnel at Town Quay in Southampton at about 21:50, in time for the 22:30 boat.
So, between 10AM and 10PM my average speed was about 39mph.
The bus is gone (look out for it around Newton Abbot in 12-18 months) and there is another, rather interesting Golf2 residing at Wellow Racing.
-
now thats a road trip and a half,
-
DH is that Milber Trading Estate? If it is its not far from me
-
Wot Chuff said, I agree.
So what's 'interesting' about the new mk2?
-
think about it, thomas likes it, :lipsrsealed:
-
think about it, thomas likes it, :lipsrsealed:
It could be a 1.3 for all I know, maybe he's just a bit delirious after driving a mk3 for so long!
Guessing by the front wing, it might be a failed attempt at an engine conversion?
-
Thinking Synro?
What make is that trailer? I want to get one with my Golf 4 TDI Estate for towing new cars in.
-
Another MK2 Syncro.
Tidy.
-
Another MK2 Syncro.
Tidy.
That was my first guess, but I thought "who would need to identical syncros?"
Then I remembered who it is!
-
What make is that trailer? I want to get one with my Golf 4 TDI Estate for towing new cars in.
After taking your trailer test, obviously.
It's a Fountain.
Good little trailer and light, too.
The white Golf isn't mine, it's one of the other guys in the barn.
It is a Syncro and a 90-spec one, too so extra super rare. It's had a slight tap on the front, but there is naff all damage TBH and the shell is better than mine.
-
are there interesting plans for it? the start of an ABF syncro race series?
-
Is that the coach graveyard you pass on the A38 southbound? You can kinda see it in a dip on the side of the road?
-
No, it's Futbus's workshop, which is south of Newton Abbot.
Not 100% on the plans for it.
Mike, who owns it has already made a start on sorting out:
It was full of water, so everything inside needs to be stripped out!
Three cars won't really make much of a race series, will it?
Especially as only one of them runs at the moment!
-
Been following Mikes progress on Facebook with this, thinks he's excited
-
Indeed. A strange outbreak of keen-ness rarely seen on the IOW
-
Wish I had a work space like that
-
Well I finally decided on an engine for my syncro as thought I'd better do abit more with it than just abuse the 4x4 system!
Syncro all runs lovely now
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/mike671/a3b2f738.jpg)
Engine for transplant
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/mike671/05f97695.jpg)
Better start on wiring soon
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/mike671/153f7721.jpg)
Picked up some K-jet fuel supply to supply fuel to the AGU got to modify thr K jet lift pump for syncro tank tho
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/mike671/273facea.jpg)
Other projects have mainly been on our SJ wich me and DH use for 4x4 club
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/mike671/3974b4e5.jpg)
External cage with some .:WR fabrication an DH welding skills!
Also another ABF vehicle has been added ready for the strip
And I'm on the look out for a mk2 rallye gearbox or g60 syncro gearbox if anyone knows of one?!
Cheers for looking!!
The .:WR crew
-
thanks for fixing the SJ up for me
-
Has two buckets and two harnesses now too chuff
-
Interesting and v.cool tread
I saw that transporter pop on fatbus Facebook page, didn't realise it was yours!
-
I was just looking after it for a bit.
Although I did find it an owner about five years ago when Mercdoctor bought it into the UK.
1.8T into Syncro should be outstanding.

1.8T into Syncro should be outstanding.
Keep it coming!

WR this afternoon. It was like a home for abandoned goons:

Nah, it's just having an RS Turbo LSD gearbox installed.

large door holding open device still not sorted yet then

Those ring rollers work fine!

More stuff to add to .:WR!!
These should be useful for the syncro gearbox or rallye gearbox or any mk2 gearbox really!!
And bought this too!! Should come in handy for those old part numbers...
And it works!

Will have to start calling this Wellow museum soon
Good find tho!
-
Good few hours at .:WR today, with Mike671, Bricey and Dave_IOW.
Bricey's V6 4Mo had its back box stuffed full of fruity stuff - it now sounds fruitier than an Innocent smoothie.
Dave's new Golf2 was then put up on the ramps and given a most thorough dose of looking at. After that the carb was fettled by Mike.
While this was going on I was tidying up bits on the SJ, around an inspection by one of our scrutineers. Got LED trailer lights to sort tomorrow, then we should be ready to roll out to Knighton Sandpit on Sunday for a 4x4 trial.

I am coming over to play in a Sandpit ?

James's exhaust
Thanks for looking at mine, glad its all good and thank you VERY much for advice and helping me pre-spend my hard earned!
SJ is awesome, we tried to find the copse and failed! See you Sunday
-
Can't wait for the trial, took Dave up the lane and see what you mean about the screen! Bit blowy in there. We need helmet or anything as its open? .:WR was put to good use as always at a weekend lol
And a happy bricey with all his fruity bits on floor lol!!
-
May i suggest these for the SJ?
Definately abit blowy!
-
Can't believe you didn't find the copse. Ah well - your time will come.
Victi Passengers are free at the trial.
No lid needed, as it's got steel on top.
We need a replacement screen in it definitely - it's flat glass so we just need to find someone in one of the glass suppliers on the IOW to cut a screen to suit.
-
more spectators for sunday, sweet
as for screen, find onecheap between yorkshire and the IOW and i will bring with me
-
extremely happy with the outcome of the exhaust
also the grill is about to get mangled!!lol,
i suggest a .:wr BBQ soon

Strong work thoughout, good read
Creasing up at the 'Rhino rave' graphics a few pages back too

Well the rhino rave is awesome and cage works I rolled it twice DH managed to keep it on all 4 wheels but it tested the cage out I had poor Dave-iow passengering with me first time I toppled it he didn't sit in after that lol, chuff was there too to support DH and me for the trial!
First time

Second time
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/mike671/2a47d228.jpg)
My AGU loom is stripped back for the mk2 and works with original immo for now as its free and talks via diag so that's all good
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/mike671/8dd05fe4.jpg)
And also blagged these too 6ton stands stand about 2 1/2 feet tall on lowest setting not sure what we will use them for yet?!

Also endured the 'syncro experience'... Pant's aren't even worth washing i don't think, black bag job
Now in 2 minds over what engine to put in mine for about the 5th time, thanks Tom...
-
They were DannyP's pixies originally. He handed them on to me, I handed them on to Mike, who mutated one into a 20VT Syncro pixie, and passed a few back to me, which I'm still handing out to other people.
I wouldn't describe them as pixies if DannyP hadn't originally. They are evil little f*ckers.
Maybe you'd like an ABF out of .:WR to go in your Golf, Dave? I'll take that fat-assed 1.8T off you in exchange, to go in the Corrado.
-
Too many cooks something something something.
Yes, it will go in there and it did.
Meanwhile I swapped out the 256mm brakes that were on the the Corrado for the 280mm units off the Cordoba.
This will make the Golf TDI stop much better shortly.

Last time we came back with a roofbox.
-
Last week I improved the kitchen facilities - bigger worktop, better for making tea.
Put up a new shelf for stuff over one of the work benches.
Also strapped the same work bench to the wall so it is better to actually work on.
This week the SU carb on the SJ has been tuned and that seems to now run satisfactorily, although the idle needs taking down from 2,000RPM.
Carbs, eh?
-
ooooooooo Carbs, inlet manifolds, long bank holiday weekend ?

^^^^^^ bring it down then!!!!!
