The order is in but not signed yet - will do tomorrow - won't reveal the spec until the order is signed and I've faxed it back - perhaps you guys and gals should post your predictions as to the spec and let's see tomorrow who was closest - the final spec is not even as you might assume from yesterday's thoughts...
Next, thinking of changing the Freelander 2 for a Volvo XC90 - I'll go and see if there's a forum - they're going to love me as much as you lot love me...
-
5 door, black, manual, leather, xenons, 18" wheels
-
my parents have got an xc90 executive. I'm really not a fan. It's not fast or economical (stating the obvious for a 4x4 I grant you) and is far from spacious. A LR Discovery is a far better option imo.
-
Give that man a round of applause   proud of you mate so now I think: white 3 door dsg leather and sunroof.
-
I'vr just looked outside, so unless my misses is off out in the car, James has nicked mine.
I'd say Red, 3rd, Manual, Leather, Sunroof, ACC and RCD510
-
The order is in but not signed yet - will do tomorrow
So there's still time to change your mind.
-
James how do you get out of the house in the morning ?,Now shall i wear the black socks or the white
-
have you decided what colour pen to use to sign the order?
-
I reckon he's gone and bought a Polo
-
have you decided what colour pen to use to sign the order?
quality..

-
James is about to order..... (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2690/4038010672_d5f4482d06_o.gif)
-
Good deals on them at the moment - Discovery 4 is stupid money
-
Wife back?
-
Red, 3 door, manual, RCD510, Cloth, winter pack.
At least you got three months to try and make a decision on who to insure with!!!
-
have you decided what colour pen to use to sign the order?
Candy White?
-
order form is about to be faxed to me....
-
order form is about to be faxed to me....
Come on James, spill the beans. What have you ordered ?
-
not till I've signed the order form - being faxed to me any minute now....
-
James
Come on man the suspenders is killing us!!! what is it don't tell me you've gone and ordered a fiat 500 or something totally off the cuff.
At least we've had some larfs with you lately.
-
From your last posts I'm guessing its Candy White, hope you have same spec as me, means they might actually build ours on time!
Dave
-
seriously, GW (I do do 'seriously'), you will have to wait - when the order form has been signed and I've faxed it back, I shall reveal all - it's a great car and worth a lot of thought but this is more like I'm spec'ing a 100 ft yacht or a Gulfstream Jet!
-
James
You are dragging this out now is it diamond encrusted by any chance? .
I can't face my dinner i'm that wound up!!!!
Please please put us out of our misery.
-
I want to wait till tomorrow when I have received the order form, have signed it and have faxed it back - I'll then feel that whatever you guys say, I'll not want to cry to the dealer about wanting to make changes to the order - you've waited this long, one more sleepless night shouldn't break you.
J
-
I feel fifteen again and you are that sl*tty older girl showing me her jubblies.....

J
But why won't you??? You will still have umpteen weeks to change colour, extras, you name it until the build date has been confirmed.
-
Months, na, years knowing VW
-
You're joking, p3asa?! How will I manage to not change all the time?
-

Next, thinking of changing the Freelander 2 for a Volvo XC90 - I'll go and see if there's a forum - they're going to love me as much as you lot love me...
We have an XC90, bought it in March this year, brand new, to be honest I was not a lover of the car, but as time has gone by, I have to say its a very very good car. We have the 2.4diesel which is about 185ps, I think they have increased to power a bit now, but its not a bad engine, very quiet too. Its a great motorway crusier too and its better screwed together than my mk5 golf which is not saying a lot, but it does have a quality feel to it. You can also get some great deals on them too.
-
And it's a proper 7 seater, so people carrier or XC90....
-
Thnx - we love the Freelander 2 but a bigger 4x4 would be useful and, as you say, good buying opportunities on the XC 90 at the moment. Good value - look at the daft prices on things like Disco 4 and Lexus RX 450 H - both mid £50K's!! No-one will be paying that, though...
-
James
Is the order form signed then? When are you going to tell us what you've ordered?
GW
-
i know GW, the suspense is more intense than getting my own car!
-
He probably changed his mind a few hundred times between yesterday and today and is now going through the brochure again just in case he missed an option or something.
-
It's Sharpie.
-
Calm down, dear, it's just....
The order form didn't come over today - maybe tomorrow - I haven't changed my mind again - the spec I decided on yesterday, or was it Tuesday, is the same one I am going to order...
Later.....
-
Hurry James, our intrigue will quickly turn to boredom!!!

Ordering tomorrow - will reveal spec when back at home and have it in front of me...
-
snoooooreeeeee!!! Come one James, it's getting dull, what are you ordering? We don't really care if it's official or not, just spill the spec so we can then debate for a week what you should and shouldn't change.
-
Ordering tomorrow - will reveal spec when back at home and have it in front of me...
I think you just crave attention
-
I think you just crave attention
[/quote]
Ha ha think you've hit the nail on the head, this has got boring now!!!
-
OK:
3-door (would have had 5-dr if was ok with side rear seat airbags but I'm worried by critics' analysis on dangers of airbags injuring children) - 3-dr should be tougher body shell than 5 but each and every accident will affect a car differently so all my thinking on the subject is probably pointless - G-d Forbid it's ever a necessary concern!
Service plan
Manual - more me than DSG
pearlescent black - considered white but I think it might look worse when only a bit dirty than black will look but probably not much in it - might be too many whites around when I sell the car - might affect resale values though there'll be loads of p black around, too.
Considered red but isn't metallic/pearl essential for resale values. Also considered carbon grey - I like p black and just think it's the safer bet for resale values.
RCD 510 with Dynaudio
DAB radio
Elec sunroof
Front & rear parking sensors
18'' Monza Shadows
Winter pack
Cruise control
Lux pack
Flat tyre indicator
Tourist safety pack
Sport chrome strip rear
Boot sill protector - transparent
VW Touch Phone (works with iphone)
Flexible load liner
Door sill trims (transparent)
not bothering with mud guards - I don't think my driving calls for them
ACC pointless for me
Sat Nav not worth the money (to me) - can spend £60 and get it on iphone or buy Tom Tom hardware
besides colour uncertainty, only thing bothering me is that sticking with cloth - I just think it hugs the driver's back better than leather, I think the leather removes the character which the cloth brings to the car and I think the cloth will age better than the leather - I also don't have the patience to look after the leather as I believe one must - cloth doesn't need the attention.
That's it.
-
BTW - absolutely no disrespect intended towards anyone whose thinking on the car runs counter to mine! - one thing on which we're all agreed, it's all so personal.
-
Thanks for all your help and wishing you all the best of health to enjoy your cars!!
-
Wey Hey, at last James
You will no doubt agonise over other options as the weeks go by but that seems to be natural.
Like you say it is oh so personal and what suits you won't suit others. I like both the white and the black but I have found on my DBP, I can wash it and then by overnight it actually looks dirty due to the rain!! Its hard work keeping it clean but worth it. I can't remember my white XR2 being like this but then it was 20 years ago
-
James, What about the service plan. Thats on a good offer at the moment?
-
Bout time too! nice spec as long as your up for cleanin your car frequently, agree with p3asa it looks lovely when you've taken the time to clean and wax it but unfortunately it doesn't last long!
The only thing i think you'll regret is the chrome strip, IMHO it'll do nothing for the gti as it'll be the only bit of chrome on it and serves no additional purpose.
Just my two peneth and congratulations!
-
Whats this chrome strip ?
-
yeh what is that, can't remember it as an option when ordering.
very nice car spec!
-
Forgot to put that in the list - I decided last week to include it - (service deal)
-
Pretty sure it's just a strip of chrome that runs along the bottom edge of the tailgate, i've seen it before, it's a dealer fit accessory. just had a lokk on the vw website but theres no image just the description.
Having said that i could be completely wrong :embarassed:
-
I'll forget about the chrome strip, thnx.
I'm not a car washer - lazy - better off with carbon grey? I like red but maybe more sensible to go with a metallic or pearlescent colour (thinking resale) - Don't the greys clash with the cloth colours - black, white and red partner the cloth best IMO.
-

WHAT CHROME STRIP ??????????????? :undecided:
-
Scroll up for answer to that question
-
I don't think any of the colours you mention will affect resale price. They are all desirable.
And black is a b!tch to keep clean.
-
Is this the chrome strip?
-
So I should steer clear of black?
I like red but resale value might call for metallics and/or pearlescent - red is supposed to be unpopular on the second hand market but surely not the case with the Gti. I do like carbon grey and I imagine it doesn't have the black/white dirty look problem - I still think the carbon grey clashes with the 'jac' cloth interior colour
-
Go with what you want not what others think you should have.
Personally I wouldn't worry about re sale. Trade in value is the same regardless what colour you have unless it was a one of a limited run of 100 or something similar.
Any silver car I have had has always been the best to look clean. I could go months in between washes and it would still look relatively clean. But it was boring. It didn't stand out. Every other BMW or Merc is silver.
-
What colour is your Gti, p3?
-
thats a good spec you've went for, i agree about the chrome strip though, would seem a wee bit pointless imo.
-
I don't have the GTI. Its the GT and it's below
It does take a bit of work to keep clean but looks fantastic when it's clean.
-
Probably not much to choose between black and white in terms of looking clean, or not - I think black is more me at 43 yes old
-
Thnx, p3
-
you'll never have a problem with resale of a gti as long as it's been relatively well looked after regardless of what colour, metallic or otherwise, i've gone for steel grey as i currently have it on a mkv and feel it's good all round, ie not too dark that it looks mucky after a few days and if it's been washed and waxed you can tell as well. i personally think red is a colour that needs to be cared for pretty well or will look shabby after a while. white looks amazing on the gti and my brother has a white scirocco that hides the dirt a lot better than you would think. if you have no intention of caring for the paint like a majority on here then (however boring) silver is the way to go.
Again this is just MY opinion and as p3asa says go with what you like and i would'nt worry about selling it on cos you'll have no worries especially as they're so in demand!
-
James
Sounds perfect what a great spec. Don't worry about black it looks fine dirty mine is deep black pearl and with all the crap weather we've been having is filthy, but it looks fine so all this b******s about polishing and waxing is just to put the frightners on you.
Enjoy your car mate when you collect. By the way what is the tourist pack? and did you get a good deal?
GW
-
if having a dirty car is no problem then it really doesn't matter what colour he has, black, grey, white or red, however the fact is black is a difficult colour to keep CLEAN. if he doesn't want to keep it clean thats his choice.
-
It's just that I'm lazy when it comes to washing the car, Jimble
-
Thnx, GW - Tourist Pack - first aid kit, warning triangle and safety vest - (whatever that is) - but for £15, I'd may as well...
-

didn't know this was an option. dealer fit i presume.
safety vest would be the bright yellow vest you wear when you've broken down in a dangerous area and need to get out of the car.
-
thnx, fellas
-
You have gone all quite on us all. Not changed your mind again  I know you set me off thinking of adding more to my order  Well im blaiming you anyway
-
I've been contributing to threads started by other people but no new threads of my own - my car has been ordered....
-
Current state of mind....the order went in last week - the dealer tells me that I could see the car in March - he said I can change the spec until I get a build date which I should have between 4 and 6 weeks from now. The only doubt niggling still is the manual/DSG debate - I like manual and I did test drive the DSG twice - that said, of course I was more comfortable with the manual as that's what I'm used to in cars - I guess it takes time to get used to a DSG and that after a while, I'd get used to the DSG - the worry is that if I get the manual, I'll wonder if I did the right thing - if I go for DSG, I'll get used to it and probably won't think about the manual - the DSG might be the safer option in that respect.

way-hay!! back on form!
reopening the whole Manual vs DSG debate.... have you read the 40 page thread on it?
-
Yes, read it ages ago. It's personal and I know that nobody can say anything to help me decide - I'm not tearing myself apart over this - if I stick with manual, it'll be ok. I'm just letting you guys know what I'm thinking...
-

Go and drive them both again, back to back, it's the only way to decide. There is no right and wrong, i'd have either but I wouldn't pay the extra cost of DSG on a new car.
-
It's not really a money thing - even if there was no cost difference between manual and DSG, i'd still not know what to do - driving DSG again won't really help because I know I'd still feel more comfortable with manual - I've driven manual for 25 years (except for a 6 month period) - it's a question of whether I stay with manual or put some trust in the new technology and believe I'll like it just like the other DSG guys seem to enjoy it - stay where I'm comfortable or move on...
-
James, my car is a manual and my last car (scirocco) was DSG, I really couldn't give a toss between them but I was buying new, I really wouldn't pay the premium for DSG as you will never see the money back when you sell it on.
Neither is better, they are just different and both have merits as have been debated at length as you know. I certainly don't feel like DSG is a must have new technology.
-
I have thoughts, sometimes i keep them to myself, also sometimes i have to make decisions, i make them all by myself to.
...but, on your DSG sticker, its not really new tech now, its been around a while in different guises so its pretty reliable, also your buying a brandspanker of a car, Warranty is your friend. but.....like yourself...id always choose a manual for driver fun. DSG can make a bad driver quick, but manual still requires a bit of skill an its just a shed load more fun
-
gossa, that might be exactly where I am mentally on the issue
-
gossa, that might be exactly where I am mentally on the issue
James, we all know where you are mentally!
-
Thnx, RJ - that's pretty well how I feel - maybe I'll stick with manual and just ignore the niggles, however heavy they get
-

James, a wise woman once told me you will never miss what you've never had.
-
gossa
everyone on the forum, to a lesser or greater extent, is a bit.....obsessive
-
I'm smiling, gossa
-
I really like the DSG, but if you're actively keen on manual cars then I'd say you should get the manual.
The DSG can be jerkier at low speeds without a clutch to control, and sometimes it changes gear when you weren't expecting it (you can use the paddles to avoid this though). To me, the plusses far outweigh this because I was never that enamoured with a gearstick anyway. But if you buy all that stuff about manual cars having control and being engaging and so on, then have a manual.
Rolfe.
-
I'll stick with manual or I'll suddenly spring into action and, on the spur of the moment, I'll change to DSG - either way, I'll get a build date and then whatever I've decided, that's what I'll get - I don't think I'll care either way...
-

Don't ignore the niggles, you'll have to change gear at some time.

If you're this indecisive about this, I'd hate to be behind you when you're actually driving
-
Best I drive in full auto so that the car makes the gear change decisions, not me!
-
James, just curious, what do you do for a living?
-
Policy decisions for the goverment.
-
gossa
qualified as a solicitor but never practised (that's fortunate for the English justice system!) -
I'm 'in business'.
....and...changing spec....manual to DSG - determined not to have this car go much over £25K so throwing out the sunroof and cruise control (that's half the DSG cost) - my eldest son loves heated seats so winter pack (£350!) stays - I do not want to spend £27/8K on this car - too much. Staying metallic paint (carbon grey) and RCD510 with Dynaudio....and other little things.
-
James
You're crazy! just stick with the manual that's what you're used to and you know what you're doing with it. DSG just too much dosh for what it is, an old ladies aid to driving, who needs it?
-
I've changed the order already - it's the new technology, I must move on, must embrace the future (I sound like I've been programmed by the DSG brigade) - there's a lot to do with DSG - auto, knock the 'lever' up and down, paddles, normal, sport - I'm just hoping that when I get used to it, I'll enjoy the flexibility - got to try it.

DSG is phemomenal , brilliant!! I bet if you drove a dsg for a week you would never go back to manual??? Worth every penny I say!! Steve30
-
well, ordered now - thnx
-
after doing 80000 miles with the DSG I'm looking forward to having a manual again...

I love the DSG. It's cool, it's modern, it's the future. I'd have no trouble going back to manual, but I wouldn't do it on purpose.
I did have a bit of a "moment" coming out of work this evening! I thought I was driving a manual, and tried to change down approaching a junction, stamping on the brake rather than the non-existent clutch, and pushing the DSG into manual. Fortunately there was nobody behind me and I managed to re-group in reasonably short order.
