H'mmmmm, guess I should keep a closer eye on this thread.

I can understand your concerns about this all being a waste of time because Andres isn't going to get another million, billion BHP.  He's pretty articulately explained why he's doing this and validated it fairly well.

The 16V motor is a much better base for a performance engine.  It breathes better, so revs much more freely and seems to use about the same/less fuel than a tweaked 8V.  It's a good, fun motor.  Lots of the French boys swap the motors in their VTRs for 16V motors, so why's this so different?

Andres current car has a sound shell and he's happy with it.  He's also done quite a lot to refresh the chassis. Why go off buying another load of someone else's problems?

The car the motor's coming out of has the right bits to make the conversion easy.  It's also been tested reasonably well and not let go.  Before anything happens we'll pull a compression test and check the basics.  I'm comfortable that it's a healthy motor.

The whole conversion won't cost that much and I think the clutch is sound, too.  This will be checked before it goes in though.  It also gets him a cable-change gearbox set up, so why not?

Further down the line, he's got the option to put MS and bodies on it if he wants.  This should easily exceed 190bhp on an NA 2.0 16V.  It's just my opinion, but for a fun motor he'll get something pretty frisky for less than a weighty 20VT set up, which has a lot more on it to go wrong.

The whole project, once the shell from the donor is weighed in and other bits and bobs are sold should come in under £500.  You won't do a 150bhp TDI conversion for that.  You won't do a 150bhp 20VT conversion for that, either.

Horses for courses folks.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Why?
Wayne was just quoting an opinion like myself.
I'm sure Khare probably won't take any notice anyway, so there's probably no need for you to police his thread

Go for it Sunshine Bear,

Why bother putting in an ABF or an AUM or doing any mods? well because you can and it is as satisfying as your first lego crossbow.

Come to think of it if you can buy a hatch with power and handling you would not be buying a VW hatch full stop, Mk1's had terrible brakes electrics and rattled like a bean can, Mk2's had better brakes but more weight still rattled and the gearbox was a bit suspect also not that quick, Mk3's fat legged bird in a tracksuit of the range with the Mk4 being the obese cousin who still lives with his mum, Mk5 to 5.5 big fat tard of a car (VW Harvey)
You do these things because you like your car and want to personalise and it would be boring to buy the same thing out of the box as everyone else has.
Actualy maybe we should all buy a Mini Cooper S and bleet like sheep (pink Shirt optional)

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.

Diamond hell pretty much said what I was going to say, thanks man! :afro:

Wayne, you say fit a 1.8T, maybe more power but look at the cost, check out LL's thread, it's cost him well over 2 grand for everything, if not more.

The donor car DH knows is the perfect car as it ahs a cable change box so it saves me time and work.

Do the conversion bud! its what its all about, getting stuck in and having a working car at the end that will pass an MOT - SATISFACTION!!!!!

Yeah, yeah, its pointless, i can see what they mean, but if i was in your shoes, i would fit a 2.0 16v and get to tuning that :)

oh and as for my conversion, it cost me a bomb, took ages and was hard and could of got the same speed for much less, but i got a nice base and so much potential for more power. But at the end of it all i just really wanted to have a MK3 20VT and give the conversion a go and I wanted to keep my first car.

Now get that dying 8v out over the weekend and get the 16v in and done by the next! :D :D :D
