the 8v is slowly dying, and I've got about 3000 miles to cover during the summer holidays and I'm pretty sure the car wouldn't make it as it is.

Dying?
I thought it was running like a beast, and making nearly as much as an ABF?
It was, but since I had that oil leak it's been running a tad flat.

3000miles! you youring the uk or something?

cant believe your loosing the 8v though
Going to the most northwestern part of Spain, then down to Portugal, then over to Madrid, then back to north west Spain, then back to the UK. I'm calculating about 3500 miles or so.

+1 even if this is the case I cannot see the point of fitting an ABF, your going to need a lot of parts plus wiring to sort, a lot of work for very little gain plus harder / more expensive to tune.
Not that hard fitting an ABF, remember that the golf 3 was meant to have the ABF ass standard, so everything is pretty much there.
ABF is far more tunable, at an expense, but worth it.

Golf 3 was not meant to have the ABF as standard, VW only fitted when they knew the 8v could not hack it plus the VR was aimed at a different market.

Still seems mad to me all that work for 10bhp as yours is around 140 I believe.

Why not fit a VR would be a better bet.

1bhp more but a different output all together. 180 is easy with some simple tweaks and a VR would be to high on insurance, plus the cost of a VR engine is far higher.

Still seems madness to me.

Don't drag that into it, tell me what is the point of fitting a ABF to this car when you can go out and buy the same car.
