i asked this not so long ago and was told you shouldn't torque the wheel bearings up as this will damage it you should tighten it up until there's no play in the bearing. To do this you need to remove the centre cap in the wheel fit wheel to hub fit castle nut and tighten the nut and wobble the wheel until u feel no play remove wheel and fit the split pin and that's it job done.

Spot on, there is no torque figure, as above tighten untill no play, overtighting them will damage them.

Rear wheel bearings on mk3's are tapered, so hence no torque setting.

See you're a Derby lad, you'll be getting your parts from Autovern on London Road then?  Well its called GSF these days, but fat Glynn still runs it.

Check the bearings, if the cage is intact and the bearings are not worn just adjust them up and check for rumble this is a classic MOT fail get a bit of work out of you trick.
Both mine were an advisory in 06 and the same garage has passed em since.(Car had all new bearings fitted in 05 MOT!)
They are quite loud and obvious when they are gone.
