Coaxial / Component (?)
« on: 11 November 2008, 11:11 »
Looking at upgrading the loud stuff INSIDE the car, nothing fancy, just speakers & H/U.

Might look at sub/amps later but going to be enough spent on the damn thing as it is!

I know I need 6 - 6.5" speakers, but when I look I keep seeing "coaxial" or "component".

I think I read that MK3 speakers are 'component' but what's the difference?

Thanks! :afro:

well

a component is two seperate bits, a tweeter and then a mid woofer, with a crossover to send the correct signals to each, Coax is basically a cheeper option, no crossovers and just a speaker with the tweater intergrated, comps are better quality, but id rather have a top brand coax than a cheepo brand comp if that makes sense

i got rainbow comps up front (they were 400 quid tho)

and i got Focal coax for the back, they were 200 quid and sound fantastic

Woa! Pricey stuff kells!

Thinking just Alpine coaxials then in place of the door speakers, presumably with the tweeters in the dash it would just be an upgrade to the factory standard?

Infinity Components range from around £100, I've got the Kappa series and they sound the nuts! Admittedly I have these hooked up to an amp which gives them alot more power for louder and clearer music.

All depends on your price budget really 88, what are you working with? and what exactly do you want (from the HU, iPod control? CD player etc.)

Exactly! Ipod & CD player! ;)

Currently have a SONY CDX-GT111 which I picked up cheap (on offer) at Halfords on the same day I bought the car as it didn't have one fitted!

It has done me proud, but now I have a slick ipod nano & I'm not loving just having it on the aux & not be able to control it from the hu.

The other thing is the sony is backlit red, which was perfect for the 16V but I'm not planning on getting any red switches done to match anytime soon so figured I'd get a better hu with ipod connection that's green! ;)

So in short, thinking a bargain ebay Alpine hu & will pay for some better speakers to suit, ideally alpine to match as I'm funny like that!

...as for budget? I don't have on, I work on the "what can I get that's cheap on ebay" principle so if I can get somthing half decent that's better than stock I'll be happy! :afro:

Well this is the HU you'll want then:

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/alpine-cde9880r-p-6422.html

I've got this and it's fantastic, matches all the green in the interior and matches the green of my car lol! You do however have to buy the iPod lead which is about £15, not exactly earth shattering though.

The HU is a dream to use, I love mine, I'd be lost without it, plus it has a CD player too, and good spec with 3 preouts, and 4x50watts amp built in.

Speaker wise, I'd highly recommend the Infinitys I've got purely due to the fact I think they are fantastic, however if you're looking at Alpine, my mate has these:

He doesn't have them amped, only connected to the HU and they still sound great.

i only ever run Alpine HU

mine has built in crossovers etc and is just fantastic, cant get a better sound out of any other brand and i dont care what anyone says

mine can be adjusted to 52 colours too so you can have the red and blue as i have it or the Green or whatever you want really

if your running comps id say get amps but if your going down the coax route a decent HU will be good enough for some decent sounds

i ran the focal coax in my front doors for a while, powered from the HU (kept standard tweets in dash too), then had my Focal sub in the boot powered by a pheonix gold amp and it rocked big time

i listen to house and techno btw

I'd looked at that one (I clocked your other post & investigated, in fact your the reason I'm looking!!) but have since found the Alpine CDE 9881R, similar spec, but a little bit older & seem to come up cheaper! ;)

That setup your mates got looks about right! Thanks! :)
