What, my previous post?  Anyway, no, rotate the wheel, and there are usually 2 crews, sometimes behind plastic screw caps, which hold the top and bott halfs together.  These will be facing you, as if you had actually removed the steering wheel.

There are also screws on the underside of the lower half.  You might also need to release the lever for the steering wheel up/down/in/out adjustment - sometimes a screw hides behind them.

no matter how much you move the wheel you don't see screws, which is why o asked if the top cowling should be removed

Ahh, OK.  I did say in an earlier post that I wasn't sure on the Golf.

Anyhow, have a look in the maintenance subsection of the Mk5 board, and look through each of the threads by "The Doc".

DONT LET THE DEALER DO IT FFS YOU WILL END UP WITH RIPPED SEATS OR SOMETHING.

I'll take a look for you over the weekend - all Beemers here but one of my mechs has a '56 R32 - cant remember off hand but will be back on SOON

You can remove the top section without removing the wheel its just on clips that need a bit of levering and it pops out.
Though be careful as I am now nursing a thumb with a lump out of it due to the screwdriver slipping.

yeh i know the top come off, its the bottom that im needing to take off
