Mine has 2 ariels on top of the car and in the rear heating element. It switches between the two depending on which one has best signal (so I have been told).

What - two on the roof  - or one on the roof and one in the rear screen?

Anyway, the multiple aerial configuration improves reception, but requires a separate aerial amplifier (usually mounted within the tailgate), and the head unit needs to be appropriately coded (via VAS505* or VAG-COM).  Audi have been using this system for years, and they call it the "Diversity antenna".

....I'd be inclined to state "06-Build, 05-plate" (if post July 05) as being more precise and accurate. Afterall, I doubt you'd be selling a GTI to any old Jo who wasn't a car enthusiast.

put your vin in here and see what comes out...

http://www.abvwc.org.uk/vw_vin.htm

....Is it a wise idea to let others know your full VIN # on the internet? [in old cynic mode]

Its not wise at all to post your VIN anywhere on the internet (forums, bulletin boards, usenet, blogs, etc) - but that UK site is OK, as it doesn't physically "post" the detail for posterity.  Just make sure your own anti-virus/anti-spyware and firewall are functioning, and if you want to be really cautious, clear all your cookies and browser history.

....I'd be inclined to state "06-Build, 05-plate" (if post July 05) as being more precise and accurate.

But that would still be misleading, and missing the point, and is the basic issue of peeps confusing "calender years" and "model years".  To use your specific example RR, an "06 build" could indcate that the car was built during the entire calendar year of 2006 (which is fine and legal, but is unclear because it doesn't indicate the specific model year); and it could include either a 2006 model year or 2007 model year!  :nerd:

Afterall, I doubt you'd be selling a GTI to any old Jo who wasn't a car enthusiast.

Oh - I dunno.  Whilst in our hearts, here on GolfGTI forum, I'm sure we'd all like our beloved GTIs to go to an "enthusiast" - I would put money on the fact that probably most GTIs are sold to anybody (reps, lease cars, even rentals in Europe) - afterall, Mrs Tamer isn't an "enthusiast".  There is only room for one petrol-head in Teutonic Towers!

....Then I would write "06-spec, 05-plate" - But I see your point.

I sold my BMW to an enthusiast, but again I see your point.

....Found the doc - Note it's American : -

I printed it and took it to my very helpful VW dealer and he couldn't find anything on their system or network about it. As I said, this was about a month ago.

TT...you seem very well informed, don't suppose you have any information on that steering rack issue? I was in search of a technical bulletin number on here the other day, sadly no one had any information to allow me to present it to my dealer?  Hey I've just hijacked my own post! :)
