Manual Owners Changing Gear Noise?

ok got the report back...
require new front coil springs and top mounts... (1k9411105jf x2) (6n04129540a x2)

and from steering wheel noise, new damping element (1k0129540a x2)

anyone shed lights on what these bits actually are??

When changing gears usually into lower gears it makes quite a clonk noise under the bonnet.

It can sometimes be "normal" for 1st and reverse to be a bit clonky or notchy, particularly when the engine, and gearbox oil is cold.  Does it quieten down when it gets warm?

Can you determine if the noise is coming from inside the gearbox, or is it elsewhere on the car, as though maybe a driveshaft or suspension component is "reacting" to the gear changes?

i have looked and u can see the "arm" moving (under the battery) but it just seems very clonky sounding.... normal?

The arm under the battery is just part of the normal gear linkage.  You can probably see a J or C shaped arm, with what looks like a big counter-balance weight on one end.  Provding this aint flapping loose, all should be normal in that area.  Incidentally, it is that component which gets changed in the aftermarket "short-shift" kits.

hum,,, its hard to explain, but its like it when it engadges. its just noisy, isnt smooth... but should it be? duno... 2nd can be alittle odd to get into... have to push it hard to get it in sometimes.

What is the idle/tick-over speed reading on the rev counter when you try this?  When you are stationary, or going from reverse to 1st, sometimes, you just need to wait a second for the revs to properly drop.

On a rare occassion when I try and put it into reverse sometimes it sticks and I have to take my foot off the clutch then try again - but I think thats normal for most cars?

Hmmmm, "search revealed no results" (for every VW ever built!  )  I reckon someone has finger trouble - 

1K0411105JF is coming up as the front coil springs for a 2004-2009 GTI with a PR of L98 (look at the data sticker under the boot floor or inside your service book front cover - and make sure this L98 matches exactly).  If your data sticker does not have the PR mark, then have a look at your existing front springs for "paint blobs" on the lower coil.  That part no corresponds to 1 yellow, 1 white, and 2 more yellow paint blobs.

Another diff number.  Closest I can find is 6N0 412 249 C - which is the large bearing for the suspension strut top mounts.

I really havent got the foggiest what that is.  I've looked at the steering gear (steering rack for commoners    ), steering column, steering wheel, and steering column trims - and drew a blank!

I can maybe understand why they are replaceing the bearings on the suspension top mounts - but dont get why they are replacing the springs - unless the springs are actually broken.  And if the springs are broken, the car should be VOR (vehicle off road - basically park it up and wait for the bits).

could it be the actual dampers seen as they are changing the top-mounts and springs. I've seen a few threads where the dampers etc have been replaced for the steering noise, then its turn out to be the old faithful steering rack

It could be the dampers, but that part no comes up as 1T0 413 031 EQ - which looks nowt like Steve posted? 

Actually, it maybe the engine mounts . . . I'll have another shufty and see what I can find.

EDIT: The left engine mount (gearbox end) comes up as 1K0 199 555 Q, the right (timing belt end) is 1K0 199 262 M, the dogbone is 1K0 199 855 AE, the dogbone upper donut is 1K0 199 868 A, and the lower donut is 1K0 199 867 A (all these are for a manual gearbox with the BWA engine - incase any guests are reading this thread) - so still don't match Steves last number?

to be a little more accurate. when changing gears, it makes a sound like the engine is engaging then re-engaging... (jumping like..) when changing gears sometimes.

if i was driving up to a speed bump in 3rd, slowed and changed to second, then it would make this noise...
if i was driving along at 50mph changing from 6th and to 5th  or visa versa, and lifted my foot off the clutch reasonable quick, it would also make the noise...

they said they actually changed the gearbox oil for *upgraded oil* (sure...)

Ahh yes - I missed that (prolly cause cars usually have just the one steering wheel  )  

I reckon his engine mounts might actually be fooked.  Mine are pretty shagged, and floppy - but my stealer says they are all like that . . . but they did change the dogbone.  The stealer came out with some serious BS about the engine mounts being fluid filled - whereas I know for a fact that on the Golf, the engine mounts are just a voided rubber construction.  My Audi has composite fluid filled engine mounts, and are actually electronically controled by the ECU - cool or what!
