Just failed MOT

My 8v digifant has just failed it MOT 

1. Shock absorber leaking
2. Chassis leg has excessive corrosion seriously affecting its strength withing 30cm of the body mountings.
3. (5.8%) exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content excessive.
4. Wheel bearing excessive play.
5. Both front lower suspension arm bushes deteriorated.
6. Brake valve leaking.
7. Both rear brake pipes corroded.

It looks worse than it is, i wanted new shocks and springs all round anyway so that sorts no.1. The chassis leg and lower arm bushes will need doing by the garage. The valve and brake pipes are easy enough to so myself.
But what about the exhaust emissions, How can this be sorted?

Im waiting for the garage to get back to me with a price. I might not be able to justify fixing it if its too costly as the tax ran out today too.
This could be the end of the GTI

mine too

rear flexy twisted (has been for how many years???)
2 brake pipes corroded, valve to calipers
steering rack gaitor
number plate bulbs.

Already done the bulbs and gaitor.
Doing brake pipes on sat morning, only prob is, I've no MOT and tax runs out tomorrow and can't renew cos I've no MOT till sat - what do you do eh - fingers crossed I don't get pulled!

I can do the majority of it myself but dont have the equipment to do welding on the chasis leg, fit the lower arm buses or sort the emissions out. The garage never got back to me today but i may have to seriously consider selling this car cheap or breaking it  such a shame

you don't need equipment for wishbone bushes, just buy new wishbones from gsf or eurocarparts with the bushes already pressed in. end of hassle.

there are many newer and cheaper cars i can think of than a mk2 golf.

your looking at about £40 for a tune and last time i bought a bottom arm (it was for a fiesta)but was about £15 as for welding try some different garages as it may not be as bad as the fail sheet makes it sound
also you have to weigh up the cost of replacing car against cost of repairing it
