kangarooing mk1

hi all

ive had this problem and its just getting worse, basically the car is idling all over the place and when you put the gas down it moves but in a juddering kinda way,

The girlfriend is realy embarressed with it and it doesnt do your neck any good lol

 ive checked it over and changed the fuel filter thinking things could be getting blocked up.
Ive taken it to a local garage (with only £50 in my back pocket i hope it wont be to expensive)

any ideas what it could be, just incase the garage just fiddle with the metreing unit and tell me they spent loads on it lol

Could be a number of things. I'm thinking rusty filler neck. If so it will be more than £50 but it might be something simple too like a dodgy earth or dizzy cap. This has been asked a few times so maybe try a search.

nah the filler neck and tank are new and no rust
changed the dizzy cap and arm
changed the fuel filter

garage are checking coils or something

i think its something electrical but if anyone has any plans , shout!

does the car run on a points ignition system as it could be your points and condensor easy fix just a couple of quid.

Hi All thanks for the help so far

the car is a 1981 mk1 golf gti 1.6 8valve fuel inj

The car has been in the garage 2 weeks
the garage have fitted
a reconditioned distibuter
a new ignition amplifier
a new coil

i am sure its electronic ignition

the garage can not solve this one and i have a bill so far for £320 thats just in labour as i supplied the parts

I think i need someone who knows this engine system and who is located in bristol

is there anything i can try

would this be anything to do with the warmup regulator

kangarooing could be caused by a few things so its hard to tell without actually lookin.........

have you checked the inlet manifold gasket as if this is blown it will lean off your mixture and could cause similar symptons.

you say your sure your ignition system is electronic i don't really know your engines so does it have one of these?



its a condensor on the outside of the dizzy the bit thats kind of hidden is a little cylinder its attached to a set of contact breaker points inside the dizzy you'll know if you have points if you just look inside the dizzy there will be a little cam in the middle and the points will rest on this and when the engine turns they open and close creating the spark. simple thing to check if its like this if it is you should change your points and codensor only a couple of quid but the gap on the points has to be a certain size. i might be being a dumb ass and it is an electronic ignition but worth a look can't hurt.

spoke to the garage today its definatly a electronic ignition

wonder how much i can pick up a warm up regulator?

if anyone does know anyone that knows these ebgines or has old testing equiptment

I have the same problem with mine, I've had a dozen responses from mechanics from petrol tank fuel pumps, ht leads, fuel neck pipe, dizzy cap, exaust, etc etc if you come up with a result please let me know.
