Can I better a standard MK5 GTI

Hello
New I'm new to this forum. Or any forum in fact.
I am the proud owner of an 05 plate diamond black GTI manual and have been reading with interest the numerous posts.
I absolutely love my GTI, the best car I have had. (the BMW 325 coupe I was lucky enough to own was great and had a MKII GTI in Canada, but the latest GTI has the edge for everyday fun, with quality, class and...It's hard sometimes to put your finger on it...it's just brilliant!)
My question is, can it get any better.  Edition 30 with DSG or get my standard GTI chipped?
I'm sure there is a few of you that will have an opinion as to whether it's worth 'upgrading' for even more fun.

Welcome to the forum Cookie,

A remapped standard manual GTI will be about as fast as a DSG ED30. Maybe the remapped GTI would have slightly better in gear accelleration than an ED30 due to the extra torque, but it wouldn't be that much.

Upgrading to an ED30 DSG is worthwhile if you are interested in remapping it for 300bhp thrills or for the added advantages of the DSG, or the styling and extra options and if you can afford it (obviously)

In the end it's up to you and only that little voice inside your head can make the decision :wink:

Do you know what is the sensible BHP that can be achieved from a remaped GTI without pushing your luck and also using a reputable company or will/can a VW dealer remap it. Is it worth doing, any insurance problems?  It is hard to know what the difference will be in everyday performance.  The standard Golf GTI has great performance.

Is your current car a manual ? 

As Hurdy says, only you can really answer the question as it depends on what you really want from your car.

Seems to me like you have two questions to ask   

1.  Do you want DSG
2.  Do you want an ED 30

If it was me, I would'nt change for the sake of it, but I'd wait until I needed to change car.  I don't think you'd have much "more fun" by upgrading as they are very similar cars.  I waited until my finance was  up, and then changed from a DSG GTi to a manual ED30.  My personal preference would now be a DSG ED30 with 18" Monzas !   Maybe next time for me :grin:

If the time is right for you to change car, and you can afford it, then why not go for it - ED 30 DSG and then a possible remap to 300bhp 3 months later ?  That would be my choice  :smiley:

Most reputable remap companies will also give you a free trial, so you can experience the difference - where do you live ?

If you were about to buy I'd say order an Ed30 but it would be very expensive overall to now part exchange an 05 GTI and then start modding an Ed30.

Personally I think a Stage1 delivering approx 260 bhp (limit torque to 300 ft lb if DSG) is practical and reliable longer term for a fast FWD road car.

....But in answer to your topic title - Yes, excellent as the standard GTI is, you can unlock some of its true potential by sensible modding. Afterall, such cars are built with headroom and to meet various restrictive laws in different market locations. They are also built to a price in a competitive market.

Thanks to you, JonnyG and Hurdy for your welcomes and advise.
I think a this stage I would like to try a basic performance upgrade (unlike your impressive work, RedRobin) and hopefully look to an ED30 DSG later in the year.  I currently live in Scotland but am moving to Suffolk in early summer.
I have been looking a the Revo site and was wondering what your thoughts on the 'performance software' option. Is this the same as remapping?  Looks like around £500 and gives you 255 bhp and 285 ft/lbs, sounds enough for front wheel drive?. Seems a economical option for some more go.  Love the idea that you can have a free 5 hour test of the software in your own car first!
Anybody know if your local VW dealer will offer this upgrade/remap.
Your help and opinions are appreciated.

No chance of that here in the UK I'm afraid   :sad:

Thanks for the links.
What I was asking is do VW offer there own type of software upgrade, if so are they any good, or is it just companies like Revo that offer these, Revo seem to be highly regarded.
Is this type of software upgrade the same as remapping?  Pardon my lack of knowledge.
I'm presuming the warranties are not effected by these modifications??
Does seem the way to go for a quick boost in power.
Anyone with any thoughts and opinions as to whether it is worth doing and the resulting difference would be a great help.

Your warranty will be void if you tell the dealer its remaped,also the only VW garage i no of in scotland that offer you a remap when you purchase a car is Arnold Clark VW & Seat in Paisley,they used star performance.
