mk3 calipers on mk2?
« on: 30 March 2004, 09:34 »
Hi all,

I have a GTI 8v and the rear calipers hand brake mechanism keeps sticking on. I am sure that I have heard that the mk3 calipers fit and do not have this problem. I tried searching the forum archive but could not find anything.

Short of stripping it down and rebuilding it is there a better replacement?

Thanks

Matt B.

Done the very same thing to my GTI with the help of Vr6  (or should I say watched him do it ..)

Providing you have a certain letter in your chassis number they're a straight swap. Your car has to have left the factory after '88, but I can't remember the letter ... Vr6 you out there to confirm??

Also make sure you get the late spec Mk3 calipers as the earlier one are the same as Mk2 one's !!

Hope this helps ...

ps. Mk4's fit too but you'll need a different brake line - only difference is they're alloy...

Cheers guys.

My car is a 1991 H plate. So I think it should be good to go. Any idea of the part number(s)?

is it just the handbrake cable that is better?

no, the handbrake mechanism on mk3 calipers is internal, therefore doesnt seize

mk2 is external and seizes if not greased up every so often

if you have a pre89 car then its just a case of getting post 89 handbrake cables if you want to run mk3 calipers

nah no difference in stopping power - rears only contribute about 25% of overall stopping power anyhow

I think if the 10th letter of your chassis is K onwards then mk3 calipers will fit straight on. What is the letter on yours Dave?
ETKA states late 88 was when the later mk2 calipers were first fitted, so might be able to use mk3 calipers on a late 88 as well.
Check Dave's gallery (if he still has the pic on), if your calipers have the handbrake coming up underneath then mk3 calipers will be a straight swap.
