Does anyone have a cold airbox fitted? Results?
« on: 16 September 2007, 13:16 »
Hey guys.

So I am thinking about getting a carbon fibre cold ar box fitted to my 08 GTi, has anyone had one fitted and had any good results? I fitted one to my old Nissan 180sx (SR20DET) full jap import a few years ago and found that I got a flutter noise from the turbo when changing gears (similar to a blow off valve) and to be honest, I dont want that for my GTi.

Next I am also looking at a full 2 1/2 inch stainless steel, mandrel bent exhaust fitted (turbo back) and possibly chipped... we dont have any Ed30's in Aus but I am hoping this will allow me to blow the doors off those annoying Aussie V8's with my "girls car".

I got a quote form Oeettinger on the carbon fibre one...bit expensive imo....£385

Speak to Red Robin I think that he has had one (or maybe two) fitted.

Sorry guys...
Whats a cold air box do? And why is carbon fibre better?

A ram air system like oettinger or carbonio use enlarged air intakes over the standard system and flow it into the engine intake more efficiently. Carbon fibre is a better heat dissipater and is lighter than bog standard plastic.

The result is more cooler air = more dense air = more oxygen per c/cm = better engine burn = more power

Thanks hurdy
I like the more power part...

....That's my understanding too. I would add that the power gains are relatively small and only released fully with an ECU remap. The overall engine efficiency is improved with the combination of air intake and Hi-flow+Downpipe exhaust such as by Milltek. Throttle response is improved and a very subtle turbo whistle sound at lower speeds.

Oettinger invariably use the Carbonio intake but without the badge.

The Carbonio comes with a Pipercross flat panel filter. I have an ITG filter - Reputed to be the best you can get.

Since I added Neuspeed Discharge and Charge pipes and SAMCO turbo hoses, I can hear the turbo spool 'overrun' when I let off the throttle (DSG).

Huh - the standard intake is also ram air!  And the Carbonio wont allow any increased air flow into the engine, as that is limited by the design of the airbox.  However, the standard airbox looks reasonably freeflowing, and the S3 manages to make good power!

Carbon fibre is a better heat dissipater

What ???  CF is no better than other similar composites.  Anyhow, the carbon fibre intakes are before the intercooler, and will have absolutely no effect on reducing intake air temperatures.

and is lighter than bog standard plastic.

The CF intakes may be slightly lighter than the standard plastic OEM intakes, but with only a few gramms difference, the only area where you will be noticeably lighter with the CF intake is your wallet!  :smug:

CF stuff does look the mutts nuts though!

The result is more cooler air = more dense air = more oxygen per c/cm = better engine burn = more power

But cooler intake temperatures will NOT be achieved with an aftermarket air intake.

If you really wish for cooler air, then the Forge Twintercooler is the way to go, and if that isn't enough, then cold water injection is the daddy - just ask Harrier pilots!  :nerd:

looks sweet though!!!

ok next question.... exhaust systems - has anyone gone turbo back yet? im assuming a full system would start to make a 2L sound similar to an R32.

T_T - The Carbonio channels a significantly bigger volume of air to the filter as it has none of the compartments inside that the stock intake has. It's also bigger and has a more curvy flow.

Having said the above, I don't know enough about the physics to say that any of this matters, but I have seen dyno plot comparisons which seem to show that the Carbonio does offer improvements.
