Running like a bag of nails ... sometimes

Hi,
I've mentioned this before but it's been steadily getting worse, however I think I have come across something unusual when I was topping up with oil. Is it normal for the car to cut out when you've the oil filler cap off? What happens with the car is it randomly runs from bad to worse to running beautifully and it's wrecking my head because I know as soon as I take it to someone it'll run fine
Help me please!

Have you tried cleaning all the hoses. It sounds as if there is a blockage seen as it breathes on its own when you take the oil filler cap off.

I presume you mean the breather being the flying saucer thing on the rocker cover. I presume you unblock it with a little petrol or something? Makes some sense I suppose, although I replaced it not too long ago. Also I would have thought the oil the car burns is normal for something 16 years old, it's not a huge amount anyway.
Davo not sure which hoses you mean tbh

yes, you're making a big airleak if you take the cap off, so dont be surprised it it runs funny or cuts out

After I rebuilt the head on my mums 206 for the first 20 miles or so, it would run dodgy with the oil cap off, and noisey! I wouldn't be massively concerned, as long as it runs fine with the cap on

Ok update, the car's running great apart from when it idles. Think it's the flying saucer thing again - the thing is when it idles (choppily), it's blowing oil out of the rocker cover gasket. Any ideas?

could be the pcv is blocked and causing excess pressure in the crankcase & blowin it out the rocker seal. but 1st thing to do is replace the seal!
