Here's one for you all, bit of guidance most welcome please,
Question is, do I keep my std GTI (DSG with all the kit, laser blue too!
), remap and mod it to roughly 260bhp which would make it a well balanced and punchy daily and useable car?
That would be my preferred option.
Or go for a 2008 ED30 steel grey DSG with all the kit (although parallel import,
)
That was sounding rather good, until you mentioned parallel imports. Parallels, commonly termed "grey" imports, are a minefield of problems, as it won't have any EU or UK type approvals, and could seriously affect resale.
Or go for the Passat R36 (being a fmaily man with 3 kids
)
Hmmm - I like your train of thought!

Or wait for the MKVI GTI and see what they've got
Not a viable option really, as you could be waiting at least 18months before it materialises.
(last one would be to consider a Merc C32 amg! as one mate suggested!)
They must be one of
the most overrated cars around!

My current GTI has been pretty good and I know of its good and bad points and am able to live with it, plus the major part of the depreciation has gone, whereas the new cars will have their fair slice of problems and other niggles!
That is a crucial area. You know what you have at the moment, warts 'en all, as they say. However, if you went for a completely new model, you could end up being a "beta" tester!

Now if only they did the RS4 or s3 with DSG
Ahh, but you don't actually need to change gear on the RS4, as it has truck loads of torque, through a huge rev-range!

Bottom line is, what would you lot do?
Me - I'm perfectly happy with my RS4,
and my GTI !!! Whoops, I'll get me coat!
