300hp, FWD, 1700kg? what's the point? Better have Ed30 remapped. Or go S4/RS4.
I think you'll find the R36 puts the power down through all four wheels

Still it wouldn't stand a chance against either std gti with remap or ed30 for that matter

Although this is a nice problem to have deciding what car to go for, it's driving me nuts trying to decide though!!!

Ahh, AWD... didn't know
Should be doing faster 0-100kmh than GTI/Ed30.

The US has had the R36 for a while, although only kicking out 280bhp, best 0-60 time with dsg was 6.2.

The euro version will have 300bhp and with dsg expects to hit the 60 mark in just over 5.6.

I know for a fact though that the std gti with dsg can sprint to 60 in 6 secs with the ed30 capable of 5.6  both prior to remap!

Ahhhhhhhh, this is not gong to be easy to decide!

those numbers with launch control? Ain't it bado for the car to use it?
Anyway, I have manual, so 5.6 is not reachable in my case. I wonder what is the 0-60 for a manual?

Here's one for you all, bit of guidance most welcome please,

Question is, do I keep my std GTI (DSG with all the kit, laser blue too! ), remap and mod it to roughly 260bhp which would  make it a well balanced and punchy daily and useable car? :undecided:

That would be my preferred option.

Or go for a 2008 ED30 steel grey DSG with all the kit (although parallel import,  :undecided:)

That was sounding rather good, until you mentioned parallel imports.  Parallels, commonly termed "grey" imports, are a minefield of problems, as it won't have any EU or UK type approvals, and could seriously affect resale.

Or go for the Passat R36 (being a fmaily man with 3 kids )

Hmmm - I like your train of thought!

Or wait for the MKVI GTI and see what they've got

Not a viable option really, as you could be waiting at least 18months before it materialises.

(last one would be to consider a Merc C32 amg! as one mate suggested!)

They must be one of the most overrated cars around!

My current GTI has been pretty good and I know of its good and bad points and am able to live with it, plus the major part of the depreciation has gone, whereas the new cars will have their fair slice of problems and other niggles! :undecided:

That is a crucial area.  You know what you have at the moment, warts 'en all, as they say.  However, if you went for a completely new model, you could end up being a "beta" tester!  :smug:

Now if only they did the RS4 or s3 with DSG

Ahh, but you don't actually need to change gear on the RS4, as it has truck loads of torque, through a huge rev-range!  :smug:

Bottom line is, what would you lot do?

Me - I'm perfectly happy with my RS4, and my GTI !!!  Whoops, I'll get me coat!

my only niggle with the MKVI GTI is that rumour has it VW are on a major cost cutting and will be simplifying the rear suspension setup, if this is the case, will they be taking a step back with the MKVI GTI in terms of handling therefore making the ED30 a better choice?

I doubt they will "simplify" the rear suspension on the Mk6 Golf range.  Afterall, it is identical to the Audi A3 range (and also the latest Passatt, Octavia, Leon), and is remotely assembled on its own subframe, and then offered up to the bodyshell as a complete unit.

No brainer....get a 5 door Audi TT

I take it that was a joke!

Anyway, back on topic, what about an Audi S4?  Much better for a large family, and a massive boot too.  Oh, and "real" 4 wheel drive!

Not really true.  The latest generation Passatt use a stretched version of the Golf/A3 platform, which uses transverse engine layout.  That means that 4 wheel drive is via the Haldex part-time system, which, in all essence, is just a glorified traction controll system.

I too am suffering the dilemma of whether or not to change my MKV GTI for an Edition 30, having been offered an excellent 'cost to change'. The only thing really putting me off (apart from the fact that I have only had my GTI 6 months..), is that I thought that the MKVI was going to be out next year. I am also thinking that it will be sharing the ED30 engine, otherwise it will be the 'poor relation' against the S3 and the Cupra. Assuming that production is not going to cost anymore, I can't see VAG not taking the more powerful option.

Having just reread the thread (and still pondering whether to swap :undecided:), I've spotted the reference to the new model being '18 months away'. Wondering if anyone can shed any more light on whether or not this is the case, it will help me to end the pain of not knowing what to do!

ok my turn................    Having the same car as you telboy with the same gadgets and gizmos, ive driven the ed30 and can compare to somewhat. Now the ed30 has more top end grunt and from 60mph upwards, would give our current GTi's with DSG the wave bye bye.But i think the best answer is to get the car Revo'd or something simular. If you price your car against the same spec ed30 , you will be paying 10k minimum. That is a real no brainer. The Gti we both have is more alert of the mark the the ed30 due to haveing the slightly smaller turbo and doesnt take as long to get up and go, ive been told that the Gti DSG with revo's remap will make the car out perform a standard ED30 right across the speed range ( unless the ed30's chipped already! )There isnt really any reason why to change is or if you are like me "just cus it has an 07 reg" or "the latest thing" or "Newer Version".then part with 10 grand. Thats really only why i would really change mine cus its new and goes quicker, but for £500 you can in my opinion go as quick and pay way way less. I would have a new car tommorow if moneys no object, but just bought new hse, baby is imminant arrival and this one point the nail in the coffin, missus now wants fiat 500 when it arrives , so my blue baby gets a rest from day to day runaround and she can have her car!, and mine will have its promised remap for £500 at Revo dealers in Portsmouth .
