I don't  mean when driving, but when just in neutral and reving it just dosnt sound  anything . the zorst is fine, but engine  isn't . mines only done 520 miles

Ahh, I see.

520 miles means you are still running it in and therefore shouldn't be beasting it about the place

Once you get 1k up, take it out for a nice sound thrashing and when the engine is labouring at full chat you'll see what we mean

Still miss the engine note from my BMW 530.  The golfs engine note is pants in comparison.

bmws sound like they are revving their nuts off, but not actually excelarating that fast!!,  they only one with decent performance of any bmw's is the M series, others are slow in comparison and i think poor for value for money cosidering you pay over the odds for one

I agree that they are poor value for money in comparison to a Golf but totally disagree about the performance.  I've owned a 530 sport and 330d sport and both had the edge on my golf.  In everyday driving the 330d was far quicker.  This is my first VW and although I think overall its a fantastic car its suffered to many faults for my liking.  This wouldnt be too bad but my local dealers are piss poor.  The BMW's had a few minor faults but theses were always put right first time and BMW dealers even return your calls which is something VW dealers dont seem to have got to grips with.

My car had its second replacement gearbox fitted this week and having cleaned the car today I've noticed 3 of the alloys are now scratched.  I should complain but quite frankly I absolutely fed up of constantly having to battle for customer care that should come as a matter of course.

Probably going to jump back into a 330d later this year while the Golfs residuals are still fairly robust.

my father has a bmw 330si, and wow it sounds great. just reving it it sounds beefy, ok it is a 3L, but the golf dosnt sound anything at all. even my old fiesta with an exchause (janspeed not some big noisy thing) and piperx ind kit sounded MUCH better when just reving...

it could be the mileage the car has done? being onlt 520 miles.. but i am very disapointed.

my car felt exactly how you describe steveS and i kept on asking the same question.  You just need a little patience though (which is very hard i know!).  Until about 2k on the clock, exhaust and engine sounded on the quite side.  Since then (now on 6400miles) it not only sounds like a different beast but feels like one.  When pushed, the car growls and makes an amazing sound and it really shifts compared to before.
