Using the term "revving" makes it sound like you are blipping the throttle when in neutral... so perhaps you should use the term "idling" - makes it sound less like you are thrashing the car

Anyway, with only 520 miles on the clock you should be treating it like a baby... engines mature & loosen up as you put the miles on them... but I doubt you will ever be happy with sound of the car at idle compared to the straight six in a BMW (lovely)... completely different animal... perhaps you should get an R32?  But then of course, you will suffer the lower MPG... higher emissions and greater roadtax... but I guess if you can afford a band new Ed30 then that shouldn't be a problem

no, I'm not at all like I said I'm talkin about the engine sound when just reving in neutral not when thrashing it.
Mk 5 GTi, Tornado Red, Leather, Xenons, 18" Monza II's, Sunroof, 6CD in Armrest, Winter pack & Tinted Windows... soon to be adding ED30 front spoiler, plus R32 sideskirts... then getting fully colour coded!
New engine fitted when car was at 27k... last one went "noisey".

remember that it's a turbocharged car...the turbo will "deaden" of lot of noise through the normal operation (the exhaust gases spinning the turbine) - those noises would otherwise pass straight out of the exhaust

No turbocharged engine will ever sound the same as a supercharged/normally aspirated engine

Perfectly normal...if it's extra noise you are after, why not try an aftermarket air intake, such as the Oettinger/Carbonio, and once run in, swap the exhaust system for a Miltek or similar?

phope = I was thinking of something like that but dont know what ones are the best for this car..

NORTHERNER = "Using the term "revving" makes it sound like you are blipping the throttle when in neutral..." thats exactly what i mean, i dont mean when driving or when the car is just sat idle. i did mean when pushing my foot in the gas, the sound from the engine just sounds pretty disapointing. however with phope's comment i can understand regarding the gasses

at the end of the day i only really brought it up because of what people have said to me, and i would like it to have a bit more of a sporty sound. but thats later on for now.

Have to agree I don't think the noise from inside the car is anything special.
For me it isn't loud enough. Planning to get a swanky Milltek cat back fitted in the next couple of months that should do the trick

When i first bought mine it sounded rubbish. But i found after 1000 miles it sounds great, especially in 4th gear when you let accelarator off

I've gone from a bmw 330 to the GTi. The BMW gave a lovely deep rumble upon ignition which the GTi can't match. Infact it sounds a bit like a diesel for the first few seconds. Once moving though, under high revs the Golf sounds as good as, if not better than the BMW. It's almost as smooth as the straight 6 but not quite. I love the sound the DSG changes make through the exhaust. BOOM! Can't get the turbo to whistle though

Really? Windows down, do about 30mph, 4th gear, floor it upto about about 3.5k revs and lift off. Works everytime for whistling satisfaction
