Calm down dear, it's only a television commercial.....

Ok, let's start at the beginning:
1) What car have you got?
2) What model Alpine stereo have you bought?
3) What 'adapter' have you bought?

I presume you mean that you have no switched live? I also assume, from this, that your car isn't fitted with ISO plugs (one brown multi-plug, one black one)?

dont worry! like s11eps said, its sortable. It will be a lot easier to sort if your not dead set on having the HU switch off with the ignition!? This also always serves as a good reminder to take the faceplate with you!

I dont know why people bother to rip HU looms apart when the obviously dont have a clue what they are doing, it happens so often, you would not believe.

Pic's of the wires in the dash and adaptor
The head unit is the highlighted one

What a f*cking mess! Tommk3cab hit the nail on the head when he said some people shouldn't bother when they clearly don't know what they're doing...

I don't think you need me to tell you that lot is butchered (my favourite bit is the wire that has been lengthened by all of 4cm's with a piece of chop-block - quality )

So, getting down to business, putting that mess straight;

Do you have (and can you use) a multimeter? We need to identify what each one of those nasty little scraps of wire are, and connect them into the ISO block, which will allow your nice new shiney head unit to be plugged straight in with zero fuss.

If you don't have (or don't want to buy) a multimeter, then I really think your best bet would be to go a local car audio shop and have them straighten it out for you - you're really only looking at an hours work (max) for someone that knows what they're doing, so it'll cost you no more than £40

If you have a multimeter (or are prepared to buy one) but don't know how to use it, I can type out some fairly simple instructions that will show you how to use the multimeter to identify what is what and connect it all up. Once you've learnt how to do it, it's very easy and will save you loads of hassle in the future (plus it will allow you to help friends etc out when they have the same issues).

I'll take the second option if thats ok mate as i wanna learn as i go along on this project.
I have a multimeter and a basic understanding of how it works
So any instructions would be greatly received.
Cheers

what a joke. do you know the person you brought the car off well? He really has made things hard for you, thats probably the worst i have ever seen one! so much bare wire!

thats proper bad you could have ruined a lot of equiptment if you hadnt noticed what it was like back there, that is in the unlikely event that what he had done had actually worked!

the bit that gets me ( aswell as the pointless 4cm extension!) is on the iso converter block ( top ) picture is there is one brown, one black and one bright green wire just floating about bare, ive never even seen them on an iso converter before?

fairplay doing it yourself, its always the right choice!

it would be hard to help though over the internet because the pics of the actual loom in the car are very unclear as to which wires go where, its not your fault but the mess its in would make it near to impossible to actually take a clear picture!

OK mate, good skills for wanting to have a crack at it. It's how must of us learn...

Two aims here - 1 being to identify what all the wires are and what they do and 2 to make it nice and tidy (and ultimately, safe)

I need to take some pics of my multimeter showing what settings you need to have it on etc to make sure you get the right readings etc. I'll do this tonight and post a set of instructions (with some pics) during the day tomorrow that show how to identify and tidy all your wires up.

Shouldn't prove too hard mate
