trust me you want power steering on a mk2, its horrible without because the racks longer and you have to shuffle your hands too much on the steering wheel!

depends how you drive it i suppose, i find you have a lot more control with the pas when driving a bit quick because your hands have to do more work without it.

My 87 gti and my old 91 driver didn't have power steering and both had 17's on handling was super and parking was good too, so much feedback round corners without pas its amazing, and when your pushing it along like so many times you do in a gti its good to know when the fronts are starting to scrub!!!!  My drivers gone now  but my gti is about to be unleased on the roads of cheshire again!!!!!  8 valves well enough for me, any more and I think i'd lose my license! If anyone says the 8v doesn't enjoy the revs like a valver - rubbish, it just hasn't got the grunt that you get with an extra 20hp and 1000rpm!!!!!!!!!!! Would have one though but not along with my FAB! If I had to get rid of it I wouldn't, as I now got a 1.8T 20V Alhambra too, I think that is the way to go, 150hp, makes me wanna roll it so I can write it off buy it off insurance then plant the engine in FAB!!!!!! And its an tiptronic!!

FAB is my life and the CABRIO's the wifes!!!!

GTI_Lee,

I've just picked up this thread.

I would defintely recommend getting a mk2.

I've had quite a few cars in the last few years:

Ibiza Cupra, MK3 8v, MK5 2.0 TDI (company car), MK3 16V and i've just bought a mk2 16v about 2 months ago.

The mk2 is by far the most involving car to drive and always puts a smile on my face.

I found a minter, completely standard '92 alpine white 3 dr, got power steering and electric windows, 120k. I paid £2400 which is a lot but worth every penny as it's wanted for nothing and i've got a full history of what the car's had done to it.

In terms of your insurance, you might be better waiting until your ibiza policy is up for renewal, either that or get the mk2 and put it on a limited miles classic policy and run the two cars until you sell the ibiza once the insurance has run out. I've had overlapping policies before though and you do lose out on some NCB, worth thinking about.
