Theres nothing like having a GTi, 16v or 8v. I've had an 8v and currently own a 16v. Theres not a lot in it and I only sold the 8v as it had double the mileage that my 16v had. Not really had any problems with mine that I wouldn't expect from any car, (battery, tyres, the usual consumables) in the 18mths i've owned it. Maybe i'm just lucky?

hi gti_lee.
i have lots of friends that drive 8v's mk2's and i drive a 16v. To be totally honest, when there are several of us racing about it really isn't that noticable between us all! so much more dependant on driver ability when comparing the 2 cars.
the only time my 16v is noticably quicker is 100mph + and lets face it, how much time do you spend driving at those speeds anyway?
Test drive a couple of examples of each version and see which you prefer? parts are readily available for both types and both return a similar MPG.
I think one of the nicer things about the 16v is it generally comes with a slightly better spec hence is more desirable, and the engine bay looks soooo much better than the 8v! expect to pay between £1250 - £2500 for a good one.

im 20 now, owned my golf 8v gti for around 2 months i think... paying £1,390 insurance on a car that cost me £1600 to buy, simply putting it though, its dam worth it! learnt more in 2 months about cars than in 2 years. and its alot faster, easier and more fun to drive than a ford focus 1.6 16v. but hey, i drive fork trucks that are nicer than fords...

noble tuned - and still not fast enough!

Thanks for all the info guys.

Well a little about my motoring history...

When learning to drive, I learnt in a 1.7 diesel corsa with my instructor whilst driving a 1.2 16v corsa when learning with my rents. TBH the corsas were pretty reliable, nothing has ever gone wrong with them, the only thing is it's covered in tacky plastic inside and out that fades to an off white colour and isnt the nicest to drive of cars.

Then came my first car which I'm currently driving now. It's a 2003 Seat Ibiza mk4 1.2 12v 3 cylinder! although petrol consumption was initially good, when I switched to 17" Leon FR alloys it soon killed the acceleration and any mpg gains. And if I'm totally honest I'm quite frustrated with the reliability. So many little things going wrong that's annoying such as reverse light conking out and due to the way the lights are situated it's nigh on impossible to take them apart without going insane, hence being forced to go to the stealers to sort it out as my local garage refused to do it?

Then my window motors decided to give up which meant that I had to pay a total of £215 just to fit 2 motors! If they had a haynes manual for one of these I would attempt maintaining it myself but there isnt and I dont really want to tamper with modern engines incase I seriously break something, and now I've got an accelerator pedal problem too!

It's the accumulation of little problems like this and very poor performance overall that has led to me wanting to switch cars. My parents' argument is that they dont want me to get such an old car over such a relatively new one but when expensives problems occur constantly with my seat I feel it cant be much worse in a Golf, which at least I can learn how to fix and not feel too guilty if I botch little things up.

The Ibiza was bought for £6k with 26k on the clock and for that kinda money I was expecting a pretty damn good car without any problems for at least a few years which has obviously been proven wrong so now I'm on the lookout for one of my alltime childhood dream cars, my argument to them? "I'm definitely getting one sooner or later so if you force me to leave it later then it's just gonna be harder for me to find a decent example." Although they didn't take it too well I think they understand, plus it's my own hard earned cash anyway

So with a little luck I'll be one of you happy and fingers crossed lucky gti owners out there

Regards,

Richie Lee

Oh yeah btw when i get the golf I'm going to have to cancel insurance for my ibiza as I dont think they'll match the quote I got for the golf. How do I go about doing this? And how much do they charge for cancellation? I paid £646 in one payment for the year and I'm with norwich union.

Richie

don't cancel the pilicy - you will lose that years no claims!

Just change the car on the policy to what ever golf you get, and pay the extra what ever that may be! The whent eh policy runs out contact martinb on here via the insurance subforum, and he'll you a super deal!!!

I've only been on the new policy a couple of weeks. If I dont cancel it i'll be paying upwards of £1400 for insurance for the new car, whereas I got a quote for a gti from another company for £792?

words of wisdom

stuff this insurance game, i had a year and a halfs named driver NCB on direct line, who are crazy dear for young drivers, then got ma gti when i was 19 and insurance for £630. at the end of the day, it's no just the insurance, it's the maintenance that's gonna kill you on this car if you're at uni. either buy a sh!tter wi 12 month's ticket or get a slowmobile, at the end of the day, you'll be able to buy what you want when you graduate

Right I've found another gti since the last valver I went to look at was a sh!tter.

This time it's a 1990 black 3dr gti 8v with 114k miles.

asking price? £1000

Apparently no rust and looks pretty decent, big bumpers on it but not sure if they're standard as there are no fog lights?

No PAS and no Electric windows and no central locking  :undecided: The way I see it less to go wrong?

Ok now I know what I've said before about no way am I getting an 8v but after looking for so long and thinking about it a lot I think I could live with one. And when I get bored and get enough cash I'll fund a 1.8T engine in it :D but that's years away. My mother is going mental due to me wanting to sell my car for "a heap of rust" as she put it along with threats of eviction. But i think i might just get it anyway  haha but yeh what do you think about it peeps?

£1000 seems a bit steep to me, unless of course its in tip top condition?
Plus I'd also NEED PAS and central locking, leccy windows do go wrong (tell me about it!!), and I could personnaly live without them..

I'd also want fogs in my big bumpers!!

£700 max???
