Well I'm sure looking forward to getting one, as for whether I can find one or not remains to be seen, 8vs seem to be in plentiful supply around my area but I'm looking for the 16v or "valver" is it? I'm new to all this veedub terminology. As for a getting hold of a minter, I'll have to be patient I suppose, nearly jumped into getting a black valver down swansea way for £1250 with 110k on the clock but non standard wheels and rust on the rear quarter panel. Just didnt look right to me and a bit on the pricey side.
I'm looking to just maintain one for the meantime until I can actually afford mods on the insurance really. Being 20 I'd be content on being insured on a standard car nevermind a modified one.
I would do a bit of research into 8v vs 16v before you get seduced by the idea that more valves = better. In the real world, there is little to choose in terms of performance. Don't be seduced by bhp, torque is more important, as is how it's delivered. 16v engines produce most of their output at the top-end of the rev-range - personally I'm quite happy to have power low down without feeling like I have to change down a gear whenever I want to overtake. Don't take this the wrong way, but do you really understand the internal combustion engine, and the implications of the extra valves / cylinder?
Also, the engine in the 8v is simpler and more reliable, less to go wrong, less to break when it breaks, better on fuel etc. You may also find insurance is cheaper.
They are both great cars, don't get me wrong, but all I'm saying is that the 8v isn't necessarily the weaker of the two. To me, they are more /different/ than better and worse. Take one for a drive - you might be more impressed than you think.
Disclaimer - I drive an 8v, but that was a conscious decision, it wasn't because I couldn't afford a 16v. I am also 29 and don't feel I need to show how hard I am by driving everywhere as quickly as possible, and crashing lots. Having said that, I don't hang about.
