Sell 2003 1.2 Ibiza and get a Mk2 GTi 16v? Wise?
« on: 29 April 2007, 07:15 »
Basically I've now saved up enough of my own cash to be able to get a golf gti 16v mk2. Always loved them and it seems quite possible to get one. Was just letting you guys out there know that i'm now on the look for a minter! If you know anyone selling a decent example let me know please?

Instead of using the parents' money I've decided that I want to go out there and get my own motor with my own hard earned cash! I only paid half of the car I own now, i'm sure one that's actually my car 100% would make me happy, especially a car as iconic as the golf.

I'm 20, with 2yrs no claims and quotes seem to be about £1k. Seems reasonable considering my ins this year has come to £646 for a mk4 1.2 64bhp ibiza! Any advice you guys could provide would be amazing as I'm quite new to the whole "old skool" dub scene.

Regards,

Richie Lee

Soon to be gti owner, hopefully!

PS:looking for cheap insurance, any reccommendations would be appreciated.

yeh PM Martin on here (see insurance section) he saved me a packet on my valver (£250 for me and the mrs Fully Comp - sorry just to rub in it   )

And yeh your making a good investment, just be prepared to keep spending on it - even getting a "minter" you're still going to have things going wrong an a possibly 20yr old car.

I've had to do clutch (£250), rear brake calipers (£80) fitted them myself to save the labour, there is a few other bits too! Also allow yourself some "mod" money - as soon as you get it you'll want to modiify oit your taste eg, suspension, engine (I've got ported head cams etc... - Upwards of £700!), debage grills, crystal headlights etc... Its an expensive business!!

But its great

Well I'm sure looking forward to getting one, as for whether I can find one or not remains to be seen, 8vs seem to be in plentiful supply around my area but I'm looking for the 16v or "valver" is it? I'm new to all this veedub terminology. As for a getting hold of a minter, I'll have to be patient I suppose, nearly jumped into getting a black valver down swansea way for £1250 with 110k on the clock but non standard wheels and rust on the rear quarter panel. Just didnt look right to me and a bit on the pricey side.

I'm looking to just maintain one for the meantime until I can actually afford mods on the insurance really. Being 20 I'd be content on being insured on a standard car nevermind a modified one.

I would do a bit of research into 8v vs 16v before you get seduced by the idea that more valves = better.  In the real world, there is little to choose in terms of performance.  Don't be seduced by bhp, torque is more important, as is how it's delivered.  16v engines produce most of their output at the top-end of the rev-range - personally I'm quite happy to have power low down without feeling like I have to change down a gear whenever I want to overtake.  Don't take this the wrong way, but do you really understand the internal combustion engine, and the implications of the extra valves / cylinder?

Also, the engine in the 8v is simpler and more reliable, less to go wrong, less to break when it breaks, better on fuel etc.  You may also find insurance is cheaper.

They are both great cars, don't get me wrong, but all I'm saying is that the 8v isn't necessarily the weaker of the two.  To me, they are more /different/ than better and worse.  Take one for a drive - you might be more impressed than you think.

Disclaimer - I drive an 8v, but that was a conscious decision, it wasn't because I couldn't afford a 16v.  I am also 29 and don't feel I need to show how hard I am by driving everywhere as quickly as possible, and crashing lots.  Having said that, I don't hang about. :P

Firstly I've done one year of automotive design at uni so I've picked up the basics on how the combustion engine works  although I'll admit I'm no expert and I am in favour of the 16v for the additional valves and extra bhp. As for choosing the 16v, purely because I like a revvy car with an extra 1000rpm to play with and I like the whole "involved" feeling you get when changing gears frequently. That said, I'm not a particularly fast driver. I just want to realise one of my childhood dream cars :D

The cost issue is going to be a factor as I'm a student and cant afford many big repair jobs. So there are still many things to consider. To be honest though I've never seen the 8v as a lesser gti, it's just personal preference and I think the valver is more suited to my driving style. Casual driving the majority of the time but responsive if needs be at the top end of the rev range. I thought the 16v would be ore responsive due to having more valves?

Computer games don't affect kids, I mean if Pac Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching pills and listening to repetitive music.

here we go again 8v vs 16v!!!

at not point in the rev range does an 8v make more power/torque than a 16v - there is a graph about somewhere!!!

But to get the best of 16v yeh you have to rev them, pull well all the way to about 4.5k, then they fly all the way to 7200k.

thats they I like them!!!

I paid £1400 for mine nearly 3years ago, with 117k on the clock, wioth decent bodywork and a little bit of history. Maybe paid over the odds a bit, but to be fair its served me well with no major expense (apart from stuff I wanted to spend!) Touch wood!!!

But condition is more important than valves!
