Hmmm interesting points and the 8v Vs 16v debate has popped up again  haha, I've almost read a whole 57 page thread on it and it's funny to see you all still arguing about it.

I'm by no means a rich student, I dont start till Sept/Oct but all in all I've got about £1.5k-£2k saved to spend on the car and maintenance, thats before selling my ibiza. Although I could possibly just have the golf as a project car and keep the ibiza but not drive the valver.

It's still early days yet as you can tell but I'm waiting around for a nice example to pop up preferably a black or red 3dr.

wouldn't be my choice of car to be fair, i'd probably keep the ibiza. unless your one of these rich students, cos you would have to be cos older cars always have stuff wanting done to them

yeah don't i bloody know it.

Right, i'm a student and live on approx £350 a month (but have reasonably generous relatives when i need help) I run a 1990 Gti 8v and am only 19 (was 18 when i took the insurance out so i'm paying £154a month till next month) anyway...i really do struggle to keep it. Since i've had it, i've had to change the interior, replace rear bumper, get an airbox for it, repair the two rear number plate lights, tyres, TAX (a right killer), the clutch is going and it keeps cutting out at the moment. It really is one thing after another, and i weekly consider to sell it, and i may still after i get my insurance renewal through, depending on how much i'll have to pay.

However i do love my car and would be very sad to see it go, so i'm gonna try and keep hold of it and when iget my student loan in September spend a little making her mint!

hope that gives you an idea.
Tim

Bloody hell mun T_J_G driving a GTi at 18? That's determination for ya, at that time I had to pay £1500 for insurance for my 1.2! Sounds like you had quite a few issues with your car...but it doesnt really bother me to be honest. I'm expecting to have problems with a 16 year old car.

Tax eh? How much is it then? I'm paying £100 a year atm :p

£170-odd for the year i think,i've just payed £99 for 6 months! I had a 1.8 Driver and really wanted a GTi so i thought sod it and went and bought one. Life's too short to not have what you want if you can afford it!

Best to keep some money over from the Ibiza sale for any problems, it's hard to pick up a Golf GTi that hasn't got atleast one problem, whether it's a touch of rust, seat bolster...or a new engine! I think you were paying £1500 for you Ibiza is becasue of the value. I searched hard for a decent insurance premium and it paid off. Also did pass+ which helped a bit. Now its due for renewal and ive nearly got 2 NCB it should go down a bit!

£170 for a year's tax isnt that bad considering it's a car with more than twice the power of my current car. I've got a max of £1500 to buy the car and keep it going for the first month. the money I get from selling the ibiza will be kept purely to maintain the car which I'm hoping will be around £3.5k-£4k.

I didnt do pass pluss which is a regret really as I should have, but I am consider an AIM course.

How the hell did so many of you get away with driving GTI's aged 18-20? i was refused outright by most insurance companies until i was 21, luckily it was only a case of waiting a couple of weeks for me, i have been a 16v owner since february and loving it.

just got a quote for £792 mate

Now all I have to do is convince my rents to let me spend my hard earned cash on a 16year old car. Any suggestions as to how convince people getting a golf is a good idea?

get so many quotes that it blows your brain. Make circumstances in your favour, e.g alarm, garaged in a low risk area, and so on...
