DSG Gear Shifting - 5th gear at 30mph...
« on: 13 April 2007, 23:46 »

Might as well get all my problems done so I can enjoy myself! Did look in other threads for this, but couldn't find anything specific.

On my DSG box, the auto gearshifts changes from 4th - 5th at 30mph and 6th at around 40mph... this was checked on service and I was assured that it was 'performing normally' - can you anyone else verfiy this please? Might begin to explain low mpg (rather than raggin it down the M50..)

Cheers for the advice so far all
D.

mine always trys to shift gears at low speeds, it tends to mimic your driving mood at the time, what ive found recently to get a few extra mpg is not run the air con 24/7 also use shell optimax rather then other 98-99 octane fuel as mine is now running 31mpg around town were-as it was 27-28 round town. Went down to Dorset the other day , doing 70mph ran and average of 39.6 mpg, which was unheard of b4 i filled up with shells fuel. worth a go

Mine short-shifts really quickly too. Although I am pretty sure no matter what I do, I am never ever seeing above 30mpg - 31mpg on a motorway journey recently.

I run on Shell V-Power.

I see low-mid 20's no matter what. Should I be getting this checked?

And mine.
Tending to use manual mode and the paddles quite a bit,
especially when its cold and when going up hills,
where it really does need to change down quicker.

None of you are giving it enough beans!!!

Even in "D" mode, the shift pattern is adaptive, and if you consistently drive it hard in D, the shifts will be progressively higher up the rev range.  :nerd:  :smug:

I always dispair when driving it after SWMBO though, as it then re-adapts to short-shifting !  :embarassed:

The DSG responds to your right foot !

If you want to pootle around and use the torque, it short-shifts.

If you want to rev to say, 4000, and almost imperceptibly lift off, it'll change up.
(You can get it to keep changing up with tiny lifts on the throttle too).

If you mash the carpet, it almost redlines. But even while doing this, a tiny lift - only a gnat's - will make it change up.

Put the lever into manual mode and mash it, and it'll change up automatically at the redline  :nerd:

Simple really....

Yebut - like I said up there ^^^^^ - the shift pattern will also adapt to your driving style!

If you want to pootle around and use the torque, it short-shifts.

Only if it is driven like a granny.  If you consistently give it beans, even in "D" mode, it will shift much higher up the rev range.

If you want to rev to say, 4000, and almost imperceptibly lift off, it'll change up.

That's true!

If you mash the carpet, it almost redlines. But even while doing this, a tiny lift - only a gnat's - will make it change up.

If you do "mash the carpet", using kickdown, then it will always hold the current gear until the rev-limiter is reached, and only then change up.

Put the lever into manual mode and mash it, and it'll change up automatically at the redline  :nerd:

True again.  And in manual mode, it also changes down too!  :nerd:  :nerd:  :smug:  :smug:
