Stereo wired through ignition????
« on: 26 March 2007, 13:42 »
Hello

I currently have my stereo powered direct to the battery, but I would rather it throught the ignition. When I conect the wires in this way I get a beeping noise back throught the speakers and no power to the stereo. Is there a blown fuse somwhere, if so which one?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Thanks for your response,

The stereo is a sony and it is in a Mk4. I have tried a different stereo and it does the same thing.

Cheers

wiring the stereo direct to the battery is usually done to solve or diagnose problems of your kind, it removes the car out of the equation. It becomes just a battery powered radio, so it cannot be anything to do with the car fuses or wiring. Its much more simplified this way. unless the wiring to the battery or earth is dodgy i cant see how this problem is caused. ( even then i have never heared of this problem) how do you know its wired direct to the battery, try replacing the wire. was it another sony stereo you tried?

Thanks,

I thought it was direct to the battery because I did not need the ignition on? The other stereo I tried was an Aiwa. To be honest its not that much of a problem, so there's not an obvious fix I can just live with it.

Cheers

ah, na just because it works with the ignition off doesnt mean this, a good indicator but it could be why you are being caused problems. you say you can live with it? so does the stereo work sometimes? if so how do you make it work. if you can be bothered take the HU out and post back how the red and yellow wires connect together, if that makes sense, they will be joined at the back of the stereo ( in a few places!) and at some point there will be little clear rubber covered bullet connectors, the wires will either join............... red - red +  yellow - yellow or red - yellow + yellow - red or! red+yellow - yellow (or red!) hope this makes sense, post back what you see and i hope ill be able to help. i understand it may be hard to follow! just see how they meet basically!

From the HU the order is this, Red + Yellow to Yellow.

The stereo does work all the time, what I am after is it turning off when the ignition goes off.

Thanks.

Sounds to me like your Permanent live and switched live wires have both been connected to a permanent live supply.

This means that, regardless of what you do with the key the stereo will stay on - because your switched supply is actually permanent, the stereo will not (cannot) switch off with the key.

If it's in a Mk 4 Golf and you still have the iso wiring in place you will have a switched supply there - you need to locate this and connect your switched live wire to that.

If you can post a photo (?) of the looms I can perhaps give you a bit more help...
