OK, here's the pic:

What you have here is a permanent live supply (yellow) coming into the car and you have both the switched live and permanent live wires connected to it.

Disconnect the red wire from that 2 into 1 connector, so you simply have yellow-to-yellow.

Then match up the two loose halves of the red wire.

Yellow is permanent 12v
Red is switched 12v

Your stereo should now work on the key.

I have tried what you suggested and that is what causes me to get a beep tone through the speakers and no power??

That's a little confusing then.

If you get permanent power (regardless of key position) when it is wired as per your photos then the yellow cable must be permanent live (if it were switched live then the stereo would not work unless the key was in)

Yet, connecting it as you should (one wire to ignition live and one to switched live) you get nothing?

The only thing I can suggest is to connect the wires so that the yellow is connected to red and vice versa (effectively swapping positions of the switched and live wires).

There should be no reason for that to work (on the basis that your switched live is connected to permanent and vioce versa) but give it a go.

Instead of disconnecting the red wire from the 2-into-1 connector, dosconnect the yellow. Attach this to the loose red wire on the left hand side of the photo.

I have had a play around with the wires but it did not work. However I now have a new problem in that I have no power at all going to the HU! Any idea what I might have done.

Do you have (and know how to use) a multi-meter?
Where in UK are you?

sounds like that may have just blew the fuse for the main hu power, in the car, not the HU.
