Edition 30 Wheel Spin and Understeer
« on: 22 March 2007, 18:40 »
Didn't want to post this as I'm sure Phil will be gloating thinking/saying I told you so... but I have just run in my Edition 30 and it constantly wheel spins and I noticed on the first hard corner that the wheels were scrambling - and failing - to get grip resulting in understeer.  The normal GTI never had these two issues - well it did wheel spin but only after the wheels had done 10k miles and Shell coincidently upgraded optimax to V-Power at the same time

Errr bugger! I guess in the great conversion into a carbon fibre'd racer you'll need to get one of the quaiffe diffs fitted!

I've not noticed that at all...I've done 1700 miles or so in the last 3 weeks touring England and the Central Belt of Scotland

I do get some wheelspin coming out of a few roundabouts, but nothing unexpected, and even with some spirited driving, haven't notice any understeer thats caused me to crap myself! I had a few B road blasts in the last 2 days, and it performed wonderfully

well I have Dunlop tyres which seem quite hard and plasticky compared to the Conti's I had on my last Mk5 GTI which was a standard car.  The plus side of 230bhp of course is acceleration from around 30 - 70mph is phenomenal and close to the Subaru Impreza STI I owned once which had 260bhp and that was the quickest car I have ever owned.  I don't think a standard GTI would touch it from that kind of speed - you can literally feel the difference.

can't say that i've had any probs like that.
However this could all be driving style and how you modulate the throttle, only gunning once you 'feel' the grip. Dont think its a prob with the car more like you've been spoilt by the previous 4 wheel drive illyun.
On this subject though, and now it's not as bad as some (BMW), but the cars traction control can be abit obtrusive on hard throttle in second gear out of a corner - bloody modern cars - what happend to the good old days of of understeer steering through the throttle??

Finally passed the 1k mark on sunday on my way back from Glasgow and gave the car the monty on the cairnaomount - well impressed! However as good as the suspension was on that type of road i do have the feeling that car maybe a bit soft! It has a wonderful fluid motion to it but i do feel it could be tightened up a bit. Their is a rather curious rear end 'catched pendulum' effect (faint) that i get at times as if the stability management is at work. This is without even taking into account that i still think it needs a 20mm drop.

I have just run in my Edition 30 and it constantly wheel spins and I noticed on the first hard corner that the wheels were scrambling - and failing - to get grip resulting in understeer.

That is exactly the same kind of problems I get with my standard GTI.  Its on Dunlop SP SportMaxx, which, as I've mentioned elsewere, are an utter pile of poo!

How do you find them under hard braking in a straight line?  I find that mine lock up way too easily, too.

The normal GTI never had these two issues - well it did wheel spin but only after the wheels had done 10k miles

Which type of Conti boots were on your last one?

and Shell coincidently upgraded optimax to V-Power at the same time

Ever tried Tesco 99 ??

LOL

You mean those "quaiffe diffs", which are actually a blatant copy of "Torsen" diff!  :nerd:

just to add my ed30 experience.

Im at the end of the running in phase but have give it some on a few occasions and haven't felt any understeer as yet. Ive suffered a bit of wheel spin at roundabouts in the wet but only for a spilt second.

Coming from a mk4 GTi the handling is superb.

Im currently running conti's as a comparison.

Which ones, the SP SportMaxx ???  What cold tyre pressures are you runing?

I find I've had to increase them quite a lot from the standard pressures, as, like you've observed, the tread itself is quite hard, yet the actual carcass is very weak.  Indeed, many people have complained of noticeable deformation, after leaving the car standing for a period of time!

compared to the Conti's I had on my last Mk5 GTI which was a standard car.

Would they be the Conti SportContact2s ??

Which type of Conti ??  If they are the SportContact, would they be the 2s, or the latest 3s ???
