yet more problems
« on: 29 August 2006, 13:20 »
Ok....

So I took my car back to the guys, they called me to say they've thoroughly checked the engine and its running fine. As for the horn/break issue, they've looked at my fuse box and said its all hanging loose and its hazzardous! (even though I got it all re wired in March!) Need fuse box securing and a new fuel relay! So the horn thing is to do with the fuse box! Also, I noticed I couldn't get it into 5th gear at all, so they looked at that and said it needs a new clutch, cable and linkage which off the top of his head, he's quoted £350 to £400 to sort. AAAAGGGGHHHHH!!!!!  Also they said The engine mounts are shot, the rubbers are swelling or something? :undecided: so need new engine mounts to get it to run as smooth as poss. Should that have been included in the rebuild does anyone know? I don't know what do do!?

Any ideas/suggestion/opinions welcome as usual.

p.s anyone want to make me an offer for a much loved mk1 golf? (probably not!)

Gem

they should have inspected things like the fusebox, clutch and engine mounts when they were putting it back together and made some recommendations.. but it wouldnt have been part of an engine rebuild quote. you might aswell stick with it now.. gone too far just to give it all up.
come down to E38 this weekend and get reinspired

Yep as Toph says!

And yes move garages! That quote for a clutch is extortionate!

Out of interest, what would be a more realistic quote?

Gem, if the fusebox needs securing then that shouldn't be too expensive to do, it's the re-wiring that costs, but take it back to the people who put it in as they should have done all that. Your fuel relay is about £20 from GSF as I bought one the other week so don't let anyone sell you one for more than that. As for the clutch, my cab's in the garage at the moment getting a new one so I'll let you know how much that is when I get my bill. A clutch cable will be less than a tenner to buy and a decent mechanic can fit one in about 15 minutes, the AA did mine on another car at the side of the road. I dont know much about the linkage though.

Ring Ladyroyd up (the guys who did your waxoil) and ask them for a quote on some of these things. They'll tell you whether it needs all these things or not, speak to Darren and tell him that I've recommended you to them, (Paul Gibson golf cab).  They are not VW specialists but they will be honest and if it doesn't need doing they wont do it, they're that busy that they don't need to rip people off.

Come down to E38 in it, and i am sure me and a few others can have a look and see what needs doing, as for not getting 5th that is a simple re-alignment of the gear linkages, it has nothing to do with the clutch. Engine mounts are an easy check aswell.

I cannot see how the horn and fusebox are related through the brake peddle.

Deffo don't give up on it, there are a few of us close-ish to you in leeds, (i will be in staffs as of the 10th of sept) so just give it time and don't get too down about it. If a clutch does need doing, then it is pretty straight forward, just time consuming. Hence the normal £200-£250 quote.

Ahh the good-ole new clutch/cable/linkage etc...  I remember when I heard that one  :undecided: had me worried til I spoke to someone who actually knew what they're talking about

DO NOT BUY A CLUTCH FROM THESE MONKEYS!!!! Chances are you're not getting 5th due to the linkage bushes being worn, 5th is the first one to go, its a £5 DIY job

I'd get a second opinion on the rubbers too, they normally harden or spilt, not heard of them expand before  :undecided: - A worn rear engine/gearbox mount will give you trouble with 5th gear as the mechanism technically connects the gearbox to the cars body - best to get that sorted (Quite easy to DIY too  just put a jack under the engine and swap the old for the new, its 3 nuts)

 That clutch quote is metal, a clutch costs about £50 and its 2-3 hours labour, I bet he was thinking of his summer holidays when he came up with that one

You should get that mechanic of yours to sort out all the work he's fuc&ed up then find yourself a real mechanic
