popping

hey all

when i change gear in my mk2 8v gti
if im driving rather fast it seems to pop out of the exhaust

and also now and again car does not feel very fit when driving
and when i pump the accelerater it pops out the exhaust
and seems to be ok bit after that

how can i stop it doin this my white gti never did it

since i removed the centre silencer on mine it will pop on gear change under hard acceleration

Lucky gits! Got a full stainless system on mine and i don't get the popping noise 

lol although on my old 1.3 mk2 i had a straight through stainless system with just a dtm back box. Used to pop so loud when i let off that it would send flames out the back and cause people to fall flat on their arse 

Just thought i would hijack the thread with my thoughts and experiences

Popping is caused by overfueling or unburnt fuel making it into the exhaust.
Check timing first.

My 8v GTi does the same on gearchanges under heavy accelerating and when backing off the throttle
have recently timing and mixture reset and it still does it

check your exhaust is sealed properly at the joints aswell this can cause it. i can get mine to pop if im acelerating hard however my timing etc and joints are fine

Damn!!! beat me to it 

  If your exhaust is leaking (crack or whatever) this will make the car run rich (overfueling) and will have the same effect - simple exhaust check - put your hand over the tailpipe to block it (use a rag if its really hot) - the car should stall quite quickly,  if not you've got a leak (you'll hear the air coming out of it ) if its a particulary fiesty car you might have trouble blocking the tailpipe

lol im scared to check my exhaust like that cos i dont want all the exhaust sealant crud to fall out lol but i dont think it leaks sounds cool when im mega booting it tho
