sony subs any good?
« on: 23 November 2003, 00:43 »
I want to get a subwoofer for my car and have a 10 inch sealed box that someone gave to me. It did have  a kenwood sub in it but this was torn when I got it.

What I would like to know is are sony any good as I have heard a XSL1036 and quite liked it and would it go well with the sealed box or is it more suited to a ported box?

important thing is.. whats the volume of the box?

sealed boxes are safer (coz u cant really blow up the sub that easy...) wheres ported can be better.. but u gotta tune it right

(i've got 2 rockford fosgate 8's in the back of me car.. )

if  you box is too small your bass will be tighter. I just built mine up without a tape messure. just marked off roughly where I wanted it and got the jigsaw out. f**k it. it sounds sweet as anyway ;D

I have to be honest, I have always respected Sony for their electronics, but not their speaker manufacture - I have never heard a set of Sony speakers that genuinely impressed.

I would agree with all the other responses - look further afield.

However, until I know what amp you're using/intend to use, I can't give a recommendation. At the end of the day, any box you have can be modified so as to match the subs requirements, so match a sub to the amp, and forget the box for the moment.

Even if the box is really worng for the sub (which I doubt it will be) you can build another one for ?30. However, spend ?150 on a sub that is killed by your amp (because they weren't correctly matched) just because it matches the spec of your box will be an expensive and needless mistake.

I agree with that Overseer and Veedubgti8v that JL are incredible (just look at the amount of sound-offs are won with that gear) but if you intend to use a 25wrms un-branded amplifier that would struggle to stretch the standard fit speakers, then you'll kill it in a day.

I've got a sony XM502 but i was gonna drive my 6X9's with that and then source one for the sub. Kinda keen on sony as I've never had any probs with them and the headunit is sony.
