cd \ radio for £250

I basically have a empty place where the stereo
goes. The car came with a gamma radio cassette player and I cant remeber the
last time I used a cassete and wanted to put a more modern unit in there.

Basically I have a budget of £250 or less :-) to get something with a radio
\ cd player .. mp3 function nice but not a important. I dont know what the
generic standard size for stereos are so I listed my car above.

Any tips or advice or finding one or what to use would be great ... also a
car novice to but hve the patience of a saint.

Any guides on fitting one owuld be great, I also haev the standard speakers that came with the car not sure what they are or whether they would need changing or how hard a job that is ... ?

i have looked into tin and the JVC KD-LH811 ios a good radio to get and halford is selling it half price it was £299 now £150 getting mine in 2 weeks it plays MP3 copy disc and the normal stuff and has 3 pre outs too which cant be bad

I've just bought an Alpine 9847R, £117 (about £130 to the web public). Can't tell you if it's any good or not as citylink have decided to lose it...

250 quid is a good budget so you should easily get a decent head unit for that amount
i have always had kenwoods and was looking on the website the other day as mine got nicked, some look pretty good

Or Blaupunkt - seem to suit the interior of a goof quite well. And mine is fan-feckin-tastic!! It's a DAB54, does DAB, mp3s off a card and a disc, tuner is cool, matches virtually any light colour cheme etc etc... And it was £249.99 off eGay. You'd have a penny left over to buy a chewit.

So many to chose form ... I've had a look at the halfords site and and caraudio will look more but I will deifnitely be sticking with a good name. I quite like the alpine 9847r ... but will read them all and nit pic through them 

Also bit of an embrassing question is it difficult to install ? I've never put one in a car. Closest I've got is wiring up my home seperate system.

I have the vw golf 1.6s 2001 is the slot for the cd \ radio a generic size ... e.g. the new unit wont be too big or small will it ... again I'm a totall novice in this area and thought I better ask before I go out nd get one.

Also what do I do with the standard vw one thats in the car ? is there a place to buy some kind of blacking out plate to fit this gap as already I have a gap, for something right at the top. Then at the bottom is the radio\cassette. I would think I remove the radio \ cassette and install the new one there right ? but what can I cover the gap in the panel at the top with :-s

you need a Golf ISO adapter. it clicks into the golf stereo loom and then clicks into the ISO on the back of the HU. Plug n Play 

as for the adaptor i dnt no if there is any websites. But 1/2fords do blanking plates and the ISO adapter.

Golf's are on ISO's anyway, no need for an adapter.

Not sure what you mean by holes, can't remember if the standard unit is DIN sized or double DIN. If it's double DIN you could fill it with a DIN sized pocket, these are readily available from most car audio shops or, if you're feeling generous, me!

Well...... Golfs do have ISO connectors, but the wiring deviates from ISO standards - the switched and constant lives are swapped... So if you get one of the harness adaptors, it sorts it out. Some makes of Headunit do thoughtfully have a connector in the yellow and red wires to swap them over so you don't need the harness, but some don't...
