This 'discount business' is evidently still a bit of a (postcode) lottery, with a possible 'loyal customer' factor thrown in. It would be interesting to know what sort of discount you could get for straight cash (no trade in). I suspect very little so the old trick of taking the finance and paying off the whole amount in a few weeks would still be the smart option if you have a large pot of money. If the RRP was more than £40k, you could then put £2k of the money saved to one side (

) to pay for the extra road tax between years 2-6! However, it would probably still pain you when the annual tax demand drops through your letter box

As for a possible loyalty discount, I recently rang the dealer I bought my GTI from 2 years ago. Yes, they have the sale records, but both the guys I dealt with (one sales, one finance) have both "moved on". Fairly typical for a main car dealer business.
