I had a 7.5GTI which had an 18” spare and tools in it. I recently put a 16” space saver wheel in my 8 and had to shove it in and forcefully pull it out to remove it. The panel under the tailgate lock on the 7.5 had a curved cut out to allow the 18” wheel to be put in and removed. My 8 does not have this cut out. I was in danger of breaking the panel to get the 16 “ wheel out and I do not believe it would be possible to get a wheel bigger than a 16” in without changing this panel. The humble mechanic on YouTube fitted his 7.5 R with a spare and had to change this panel. As it is I do not believe the wheel well on an 8 would take the polystyrene insert with the tools. If someone has managed to fit an 18” wheel and tools I too would like to know as I am keen to carry a spare in the wheel well.

As long as you change the rear panel to the curved version (or already have the curved version fitted) a spare will definitely fit, as a spare wheel with tools and jack is a factory option on the mk8.
