« on: 09 December 2022, 13:10 »
Has anyone fitted the mk7.5 spare wheel and tool kit into mk8 GTI soes the foam tool and jack holder in mk7 come out easily and is boot cut out same in mk8 so it will fit or will wheel only fit and not jack and tools holder.

I had a 7.5GTI which had an 18” spare and tools in it. I recently put a 16” space saver wheel in my 8 and had to shove it in and forcefully pull it out to remove it. The panel under the tailgate lock on the 7.5 had a curved cut out to allow the 18” wheel to be put in and removed. My 8 does not have this cut out. I was in danger of breaking the panel to get the 16 “ wheel out and I do not believe  it would be possible to get a wheel bigger than a 16” in without changing this panel. The humble mechanic on YouTube fitted his 7.5 R with a spare and had to change this panel. As it is I do not believe the wheel well on an 8 would take the polystyrene insert with the tools. If someone has managed to fit an 18” wheel and tools I too would like to know as I am keen to carry a spare in the wheel well.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlRpgeJrVdU   The panel change is at 3:45 - 6:05.

As long as you change the rear panel to the curved version (or already have the curved version fitted) a spare will definitely fit, as a spare wheel with tools and jack is a factory option on the mk8.

Some pics taken from the R Forum with spare wheels fitted in MK8 R’s
18” spare wheel saver
Shows with and without HK fitted
Also you can as suggested change the boot lock panel for one which has a cut out for the spare wheel

Does anyone know the part number? When I bought my car the salesman was to find out part numbers and costs to retrofit a spare wheel and tools. Despite a couple of queries from me never got back with the answers.

I asked at the parts department at my local VW dealership if they could get me a spare and jack etc, he said I’d have to use a reg number from a car that had the spare wheel from factory as the weight effects the emission numbers and the VW system won’t allow them to order using my reg or VIN! 🙄🤷🏼

In regards to the spare wheel there are always some for same on eBay/gumtree etc
Plenty of breakers yards will have unused spare wheels from the MK7/7.5
Be aware space saver won’t fit over your front brakes so you need to switch the rear alloy on the car to the front if you needed to and put the space saver on the rear

Can you post a picture, please. Does your car have the curved recess at the tailgate panel? Thanks.
