FYI: It definitely is a "modern car" thing - I've just read a thread elsewhere on how someone is moaning about their brand new M135i being too noisy and trying to swap to quieter tyres (they have PS4's on those).
Current: Mk8 GTI DSG, Adelaides, DCC, HUD, HK, Winter Pack, Rear Camera.. Aka "HMS Weasel"

Gone: 2017 Mk7.5 GTD,manual, NavPro
Gone: 2014 Mk7 GTD, manual, NavPro, DCC

golfdave,
I’ve just ordered the Tiguan undertray for the front subframe after reading your write up.
When you trimmed the ribs on the back side,is it obvious where to trim and how much to take off?
Keep the mods going, enjoy reading about them and appreciate the extensive how tos.

In the picture on the other forum I point directly to the bits that need cutting/trimming...Basically its the "upstands" on the edge which faces the front of the car...if you look at this tray edge on you will see it looks like a rolling hill range...all you are doing is cutting the tops of the hills off...& only on the front leading edge..basically its to get the tray to fit more flush with the subframe as the Tiguan subframe is a slightly different "ripple" to it..

Thanks for that, don’t fancy drilling the subframe, but will do it because these undertrays have made a difference.
Since I replaced the rear Mk 5 hard rubber covers for the Mk 8 plastic covers, there’s definitely been an improvement to my mpg,not massive mind you,but it’s there.
Having fitted all the other aero trays,I wonder if fitting these Mk 8 covers has pulled it all together-I mean the air flow under the car.

No problems..

& yes the MK8 Golf lower arm covers do make quite a difference..that & covering up the engine bay (skid tray or aero tray), are the two biggest improvements & many other manufactures use this..just Google underbody aero) loads of stuff, most top end sports cars are totally flt underside...the Tesla' cars are...& so are most "Eco" cars..the 1lt Eco Golfs have loads of covers...its just basic aero design, but the penny pinching bean counters say No to fitt it to the standard cars....!!..which is stupid as by fitting them they reduce the aero drag, which make for better MPG (without fudging the ECU a'la dieselgate)..& therefore gets the whole emissions of the VAG group down as per the regs.....I bet the cost of fitting the trays they had already designed to all of their cars would still be way less than dieselgate has & will cost them!!...MUPPETS!!

Just fitted the Tiguan front subframe undertray.
Great write up/how to from ‘golfdave’.
Couldn’t use ramps in the traditional way as car is too low,bit of improvisation was required, but by far the worst problem was the riv-nut gun-a tool forged by Lucifer himself!
But once i’d got my head around using it and drilled out my failed 1st attempt,it went ok and would definitely recommend if you have the other undertrays fitted, with a pit it would be a doddle.
Cheers again ‘golfdave’,your info is brilliant.

No problems, & glad you got it all sorted!!!..

Rivet-nut tools are interesting..I have a big one with 18inch long handles which also does large rivets & has a swivel head...its good, just sometimes you need somebody else to hold the head accurately whilst you lever the handles!!!..& then its a PITA!!
