Anyone taking their car out for a cheeky drive?

I was out cycling on summer car tax day (April 1st) when I saw about 5 or 6 Porsches out on a cheeky drive. Got me thinking that I should tax the Mk2.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

No one should be going out for any cheeky drives no matter how tempting it is.

Agreed. I did take mine out today for the first time since 12th March as I was getting worried about the battery going flat. I just did a short trip around deserted country lanes to warm then engine, then straight back home where it will stay another 3-4 weeks. I felt guilty for doing it but the risks are low living out in the sticks. So not so much a cheeky drive. More of a guilt-ridden one. Obviously I’m isolated in the car but there’s always a slight risk of accident/breakdown which weighed on my mind.

Trickle Chargers - if you disconnect the battery, doesn’t it play havoc with the electrical systems/warning lights on the dash etc?

Same as you Watts. I think Easter weekend will dictate how much longer the restrictions are in place. Some idiots just don't seem to get the seriousness of the situation.

Lockdown another 3-4 weeks I expect, then a gradual relaxation leading into June/July. But it’ll be a while before things are back to normal.

A while is about 18 months to 2 years when a vaccine is expected. Until then this virus will continue to spread until most of us have had it. Lockdown can help stop us all getting ill at once, but it can't stop us getting ill. Meanwhile businesses collapse, the elderly are isolated, the economy crashes, there's less money for healthcare etc etc.
It will be some years before we know if lockdown is an effective strategy.
We should all be following the rules to take the pressure off the health system. But I wouldn't feel too guilty about the odd drive to the shops.

Our best hope for a quick fix in the absence of a vaccine is an effective anti-viral. If a quick jab at the GP can prevent hospitalisation, that’s the fastest exit strategy. A number are being trialed right now.

Back on topic - my A3 style Chrome-plated 12v cover arrived a few days ago and has now been fitted.

I normally cycle to work (don't know why I have a car let alone a new GTI  ) - but I am designated as a key worker (lowly local government) and as there is so few in my office and on the roads are quiet and the car novelty factor has not worn off yet, I am temp taking the opportunity to drive to and from the office
nothing wrong with lowly local government 👍. Nobody would be getting paid if it wasn't for the team I work on and yet everyone still expects the money in the bank come pay day no matter what the circumstances are. How come you aren't working from home?
Sore point - we were sent home at short notice with laptops but no other equipment. Our equipment sits there in an empty office but they will not let us borrow/sign for the stuff. As a result, I bought a monitor, keyboard, desk etc but still had aches/pains as had no suitable chair and they will not let us borrow them either! I drew the line at that and as the office is still open on a skeleton staff basis I went in until they decide on a more formal policy. Not happy with my employer - not their fault CV occurred but they have dealt with some aspects very poorly. They are relying on peoples goodwill to beg, borrow (but not steal!) stuff but don't trust us to borrow equipment. As usual, the policy seems to be adhered to for most of us but some seem to manage to bend the rules. Those that were already designated homeworkers are (or were) provided with suitable equipment but most of us have been left in the lurch. Frustrating but I realise there are many worse off at present so must not grumble anymore! Least I get to drive the GTI on quietish roads!
