Buying advice needed - Update DEAL DONE
« on: 10 January 2018, 10:28 »
Hi everyone,

Could I have some advice please. Looking at changing my car. My preferred spec would be 7.5 GTI Performance Pack DSG 5 door in metallic black. Only other option would be keyless.

I used car wow and my local dealer has come back with £27,614 which is 15.3% off list price. This includes the VW £1,500 finance contribution offer valid until end of this January 2018.

Same spec on drive the deal comes back at a little under £27,090 including the finance offer, so my local dealer isn’t far off.

The extra £500 vw finance contribution is valid if you order before end of January.

Should I go into the dealer now and start the haggling? As its January, I imagine they are pretty desperate for sales just following Christmas. Or should I sit on the car wow offer and go into the dealer the last weekend of January?

Any advice would be appreciated

It won't hurt to start haggling, especially as they're not far off in terms of price anyway.  I'd be happy with the difference in order to be able to buy from a known dealer locally, and indeed had a similar decision to make as you.  I got my local dealer closer to the DtD number and despite them not fully being able to match it I bought local anyway, as the cost difference didn't justify travelling away from a dealer that's walking distance!  This was after using CarWow and DtD, and going to 4-5 VW dealerships in easy driving distance.

500 quid difference between DTD and your dealer?

DTD you need to pick up from Kent, possibly worth 500 quid to you for not having to drive there? (I don't mean cost, I just mean hassle)

Thanks for the advice

Im all for getting it from my local dealer. Its 7 miles from my house so ideal. Just wondered if any wiggle room to hammer down the price a bit. Ive called my dealer and going in after work at 5 today to crunch the numbers.

The Carwow figures can be negotiable if you push them gently. I was able to get a few extra hundred quid off by asking.

If they know you're a serious buyer, some will do it, some won't. Only one way to find out!

That finance offer will continue after January i am sure - they always do.

Whats sort of finance figures does this deal create?

Just give them the DTD price, say you'd sooner buy local because you like them (*ahem*) and its only 500 different, can they do something about the final 500. If they say no, ask for a token movement towards it, maybe halfway and save you the journey.

January is a bad sales time for car dealers. Say you'll sign before end of the week if they meet your haggle :D

I'd suggest similar but a slightly different tact - you'd rather buy local but £500 is £500...

"But sir, it will cost you £150 to collect it from Kent (DtD)."

"So reduce your price by £350 and show me where to sign!"

They'll probably tell you that they'll throw in a tank of fuel (which you should get anyway) or some mats (which you do get anyway) or paint protection (yuk!) for half price or cheaper gap insurance (that costs 5 times the price of someone else's) or some other crap that you don't want and isn't worth 500 quid!
