Police got in touch with me again yesterday and apparently my vehicle has a disabled tracker on it
Turns out the previous owner had one fitted and after the subscription expired it was deactivated. They have asked me to get it activated as they can't do it because there are charges involved... of course!
So, I have had to contact the company and they said they can send signals to the car but it can take anything upto 72hrs to get a response and if the vehicle is recovered then the cost will be £393!!
Also local plod told me that there is a gang of professional car thieves currently targeting fast golfs and audis in the North West area and that car crime had risen by 36% this year and most thefts were by them breaking into the house and taking the keys or assaulting vehicle owners as they get in their car. So anyone living in the area - be extra vigilant.
It's probably the same gang that took two of our cars 4½ years ago. Car's were found quickly (one had been parked up whilst they waited to see if it had a tracker fitted) and the other they were using but they were caught with it the following afternoon.
Thankfully there was no damage to either (the days of them doing doughnuts on council estates is long gone), but one needed new locks as the key was never recovered and the other one spent a week in a police compound and we had to get the key re-coded and new number plates.
In total we were left approximately £1,100 out of pocket but we couldn't claim on insurance as it was split across various policies and didn't exceed each excess.
Over the course of the following two years we received regular letters from the CPS advising of progress on prosecutions, etc., but we were left with the overriding view that the the legal system is only interested in the criminals and not the victims of crime.
Thankfully, none of us were hurt or threatened at the time of the theft, but it was a right pain in the a**e and those same 'scum' have probably now been released early, ready to carry on where they left off!
