Thanks Watts

I am, surprisingly, quite calm and collected about the theft of the car but more concerned about the house break-in. The ease at which they broke in, and so quietly, is disconcerting and measures need to be put in place to try an prevent that from happening again.

Can anyone recommend any good CCTV systems?

I would spend the money on better locks as your already doing most c**nt like this cover up as they know cctv cameras are cheap

carbon copy of the theft of my GTI. I could,nt be arsed to fix my house alarm that became faulty a few weeks earlier. I agree its the intrusion that gets you. The police,(in my case) were sympathetic but helpless. The only battle was the insurance quote on my loss. Did you have the anti-snap locks fitted?. If you did then thats worrying me right now. My wife reads this forum and this will bring back bad memories for her. It affected her really bad that someone had been in our home while we slept. It did,nt help that some scrote stole the front end of our current GTI a few months back. I have a garage but the house was built circa 65 for morris minors so it won't fit. Having REVO stage1 soon and with that comes the anti-theft setting. A big assurance.  I'm gutted for you Dave.

My mate got his X5 stolen a couple of months ago police said while cctv can help it usually doesn't put them off a noisy alarm is probably the best deterrent.

I would just love them to get caught and find the answers to why and how they target some properties and cars. My break-in was anything but quiet or late;patio door smashing, running through the house, keys not that accessible, only 10 minutes after house lights were switched off. Insurance assessor said alarm would have probably made no difference.
So everything we do is prevention against what we presume they'll do but unfortunately I think we can't cover all bases.

Concerns me too.

Just read another post on "UK MK7 Golf R Owners Group" on FB, with pics of door locks broken in patio doors etc.

Sorry, completely disagree. A loud house alarm will make all the difference. Not many people use their alarms at night, especially if they have pets or kids. As much as this type of scum are very happy to take chances, they don't really want to get caught and an alarm screeching at 3am is not something they want or will hang around to listen to.

To the OP, gutted for you. Having someone in your house is the worst part but having your pride and joy taken is pretty upsetting as well.

Didn't think about it when I ordered mine but more conscious now about it being parked on the drive. A guy I know who lives a mile or so away had his R and another car taken in the night earlier this year, R got found nearby.

Well it was only 12 o'clock and my neighbour actualy woke to the sound of the breaking glass but by the time he had got up and looked out the window they were off. One of the thieves had stayed by the car and the other one opened it whilst still inside the house. The neighbour said the driver was already in before the house entrant appeared and when he did he literally jumped into the car and they flew off. Burglar alarm or not no neighbour or even us in the house would have been able to stop them. Although my husband might have grabbed him if he hadn't fallen down the stairs. .
I think the position of the car on the drive and the easy access off the drive all helped, the police mentioned the fact the car was reserved in.

I have to agree with Jim, i've always considered a burglar alarm an essential part of home security. That's not to say it will guard against every eventuality, but it can be a very effective deterrent if a would be thief sees that they have to get past it for their 'visit' to be worthwhile.

Some thieves are completely brazen and will fancy their chances in any situation, but the majority want to be in and out as quickly and quietly as possible and won't risk attracting any attention.

As said, doesn't mean that if you have an alarm that you'll never get broken into. But if you don't have one, or if you have one and never use it you're making it easier for them than it otherwise would be.
