Conti 5Ps are great tyres.  Served me very well on GTI's and R over last 5 years.  Michelin PS4S are better - on another level and worth it for the rescued noise and superlative pothole absorbing qualities alone, never mind the astonishing level of grip in wet and dry.  Have actually transformed my daily commute.
Luckily motor came with 5Ps and although feel fine they are on the noisy side but for sure will go the PS4S route when requires. Always loved Michies, were the only real choice years back, fantastic on the Clio Williams.
Out of interest, any R owners bother with winter tyres these days, recall some did on the Mk6 mainly North of the border though.

Yes many R owners bother with winter tyres and winter wheels too, you'll find it's a topic of seasonal discussion on the R forum if you ever pop your head in there.

Just put 4 x PS4 on my Golf PP and they are spot on and really good in the wet as well and also had them on my E90 330d sport I had previously so a thumbs up from me but I don't think you will really go far wrong with any of the top sport brands for 99% of drivers and a golf GTI will never be whisper quiet .
White GTI PP......

Not the same car, but I found the Contis good when new but went a bit ordinary fairly quickly. Life was ok overall, but if a fair proportion of that was , possibly not that great. I did buy quite a few of them as well, in various iterations (bar the very latest - 6?). As in a lot of them!
However, still probably better than the Bridgestones, so looking forward to them giving up . Which might take forever .

Another Michelin PS4 fan.

Had them for six months with about 7,000 miles on them now.
Great tyre - good grip in wet & dry plus low noise.
Previously preferred Conti but swayed by good reviews to try these.

See I found Conti 5Ps good throughout their lifespan, they never missed a beat.  Got 12k miles out of each set of fronts on my GTI, and 14k out of them on the R with still between 3-4" tread, so tyres fare better on the R in terms of longevity.  The only downsides to 5Ps for me are noise and a bit hard ride on 19s.  The PS4S are much much quieter and a more comfortable ride. Best of both worlds as DCC always either in Sport or Normal (don't like Comfort - too wallowy) and the Michelins take care of the comfort side of things without the wallowing.

Got the PS4 fit and tread depth is only 7.1mm that's not right surely?

"7.2mm tread depth, as opposed to the 8mm once seen from new on sport tyres."

So yes, thats correct.

You'd imagine this would compromise the wet braking, but it doesn't...

Clever those Frenchies eh?

In (top end) motorsport you now can get wet slicks...
