Humming/Whirring type noise
« on: 09 February 2017, 18:18 »
Noticed a strange humming/whirring type noise this morning and also this evening coming home from work. Was out all day in car yesterday and never noticed a thing. Can't tell if it's cold tyre pressure related or even maybe a climate control fan. Does anyone know what the pp diff would sound like if it had no oil?? Outside temperature was 1 this morning and 1.5 coming home.

Was the noise only there when moving and did the pitch vary with speed?  I had a small stone trapped between one of the brake callipers and the disc once and that made a row.

Hum seems to get noisier with speed. It's a bit like when you drive on fresh tarmac just after it's been laid.

Dare I say check the tyre pressures and what does the tread look like? Are they wearing evenly?

Pressures were checked earlier this week and both fronts look ok. Cars only got 1400 miles on it.

Chris,

Have a look around the wheel arches, maybe one of the plastic liners are loose?

Going to have a quick check at lunchtime. Hope it's just tyre pressure and the cold weather and not the diff!

Or a wheel bearing failed prematurely

Sounds wheel bearing related. If roads permit turn steering and see if noise goes away

Went out at lunchtime and turned wheels lock to lock to see if anything looked funny. Could see bugger all in the snow! Drove home tonight and wasn't exactly certain it was humming but did notice temperature was above freezing. Think I'll check tyre pressures tomorrow and maybe pop along to my local tyre place and see if they can spot anything untoward underneath.
