I'd like to see less features, the mk2 had fewer features but was the best of them all. The features are just damage limitation.

Not all features are bad. The LSD is pretty tasty on the Performance Pack GTI.

The 40th edition (Club Sport) is a missed opportunity (IMO) to shave weight and really go for it. VW don't seem in the mood to do those sorts of things anymore. Sadly :(

The ambient light strip on the rear doors not just the front.

The 2 LED ambient lights on the roof like the Mk6.

A mode button on the MFSW so you can scroll through what source you want.

Better Media Unit resolution, graphics and UI. Its functional but pretty average really.

Extended interior ambient LED lighting

Better dials more in line with Audi (though seems they will be a dying item due to virtual cockpits, maybe standard on the MK 8)

More wheel choices at lesser uplift cost - trading in the existing wheels and then adding nearly £1000 is extortionate

Being able to select modes by just pressing button to activate and then to keep pressing button to move through menu before timing out

Losing that silly little window in the design (its really picking at the small things now!)

DCC as standard

To be honest its just a great car of the size that personally seek, and with the options available (which maybe would like as standard) and now with Car Play there is very little to change aside from the usual uplifts in engines (greater economy from the R) and maybe additional gearing within the DSG thats been mentioned recently in articles seen.

You can select mode by pressing the mode button near gearstick on MY16 GTD/GTI's

Yes, thats what do, but be nice to keep pressing that button and cycle the modes, opposed to touching screen, as you can do that while still looking at road where you have little choice but to glance to screen and press (small things I know but this is where the MK 7 is at)

Its very obvious that the Mk7 is quite close to perfection if we can only think of really minor things...
Current: Mk8 GTI DSG, Adelaides, DCC, HUD, HK, Winter Pack, Rear Camera.. Aka "HMS Weasel"

Gone: 2017 Mk7.5 GTD,manual, NavPro
Gone: 2014 Mk7 GTD, manual, NavPro, DCC

Yep, its very much into the territory of the nice to haves opposed to real issues, the only medium one that can think of is the media unit UI and screen as both have room for a real lift in functionality and quality but aside from that love the MK 7

- will add another nice to have, climate screen as a standalone option even if have to take it via a disclaimer to the telephone pack - The nice to have is for VW to not be so rigid and do some things that have you shaking head but no Sat Nav as standard in an R? thats nonsensical really, though Car Play makes that non issue for me now given limited times do use.

On the MIB II unit, the button by the stick does cycle the modes. I had a Golf Match courtesy car and it performed this function last week.

I did notice that the MIB II is a lot nicer to look at an use than the MIB I in my GTI. Still not a patch on the BMW media systems though.
MK7 GTI 3-Door DSG, Tornado Red, Discover Nav, Winter Pack, ACC, Keyless Go, Reversing Camera, Service Pack... Ordered 28th Oct... Collected 1st March!

Actually, I'll add something else:

The twiddly i-drive style controller to enable better/safer use of the MIB unit instead of touch screen!

YES! Ditch the touch screen in favour of a better/safer UI. Audi/BMW rotary dial or touch pad like Merc C Class would be much safer and easier to navigate through menus, phone number lists, music selection etc.
