There's a BMW just down the road from me at the moment that looks ok but I've no idea what model it is as what used to be a 3 series 2 door seems to now be a 4 series (I think?) and this looks about the size of a 3 series by maybe a bit shorter and has a fast back profile so only a short boot a bit like the A3 saloon and definitely has four doors. I'd go and have a look but it's raining and also I'd feel a right idiot nosing at the boot of something parked up.
I they did one of those with a huge macho Diesel engine and big wheels I might consider something like that instead of a Golf/Scirocco next.

Sounds like a 4 series gran coupe its kind of a 4 series coupe with 4 doors - haven't seen many about but I think they look quite decent and run on 3/4 series mechanicals..  you can get them with the big diesel and petrol engine - 430d, 435d (4wd) and 440i petrol - all 3 litre turbos in different states of tune.  8 speed auto box is an absolute peach with that engine because it pretty much always sits in the max torque area of the engine which is over 400 lb ft for the 330d as a minimum.

A lot of people bang on about how you need X drive (4wd) with the bigger engines, but in my experience that isn't the case because the X drive models run on SE (not lower M sport) suspension only so I bought a RWD 330d and in my view its the best all round model in the range because it handles better, sits a bit lower and uses less juice.  I run winter wheels and tyres on it and its as good if not better than 4wd with normal tyres.

^^ Exactly that. I'm not a fan of xDrive on the saloon cars at all. Really compromises the handling.

here is a link to my car I picked up for anyone interested.  At least BWM are now doing some more interesting colour options for the leather rather than just grey and black which used to annoy me with Audi..

@JBirchy and drisser: Yes! That's the one, a 4 series coupe. I went on Coast2coast's website and specced one up and even with discount it was heading near to £40k which for what you get ain't bad when you consider a GTI Clubsport or an R can easily get near those figures but still out of my budget by a fair amount.
Those 3.0 BMW turbodiesels have always appealed to me and the coupe styling does it for me but possibly not at £40k.
A lightly used second hand one though... ?

Another MK7 and another GTD. Yeah I know safe etc. but to be honest, the current GTD has been such a great all rounder, that having the same again for another 2 years ish isn't a bad thing, and to be honest, the MK7 is a nice place to be and there isn't really that much in the same class that really floats my boat.

Sure I looked at the R and actually ordered a GTI (before my projected annual mileage changed) but again they would have been MK7's.

I do like the look of the 2 series BMW, but we really need at least one 5 door in the family (my wife has the 3 door), and I also like the look of the new Tiguan, but there's no way I'm going to be a first adopter like I was on the GTD (and waited the best part of a year for delivery). I'll wait two years for the Tiguan range to "mature" and then have another look and see what else is around.

So it looks like I'm going to be on here a while longer then
