The revised S3 looks like an interesting proposition. LED headlights as standard, an extra 10bhp, the new TFT screen which is standard in the TT, plus a few changes to the front.

I'm really swaying towards an RS3 after keeping the R for a good while longer. Even a low mileage used one.
The thing that puts me off is how much you'd have to add in spec.
A bit like the ClubSport GTI, I have a feeling it would be a very spec dependant car to make the best of it. At which point although the resale % values look good in pure £££ lost I'm sure it'd be a bit painful.

On the other hand, the forthcoming up! TSI really appeals to me as I reckon a lightly modified one would be a real hoot to drive. Memories of my old G40 Polo and a Lupo GTI I had on loan bring a smile to my face.
Running one of those for commuting and just hiring a car for holidays would save me a packet.

I also have to say that I'm really liking the look of the new mx5 hardtop. I wouldn't buy one as my daily as completely impractical but it looks a hoot to drive and its got some lovely curves.

I may well rent a R Estate for a couple of years having received some of the deals today, in fairness i said i'd never own 35 and did and i am uncool and a hypocrite

wigit, you hypocrite.  Still if they are that cheap?

Finally saw my first R Estate last week in Sainsburys' car park.  Even cheap, I wouldn't have one.

I saw a video of this on a newspaper app a couple of weeks ago . Awesome car if 2 seats is enough.

These R estates must be for personal market and so chosen! as hardly make any sense for any business or anyone on company benefit for medium to high mileage.

Saw one up close last week in car park for the gym and  it really does the R badge no justice at all and just seems square peg in round hole. Wonder how many they will sale?

Still pretty much set on choosing a proper R over a GTI, A3 (though face lift is decent) and Tiguan and reason is summed up well by the CarWow quote

"If you’re the sort of person who needs an everyday car that you can still have fun with, the GTI is a better choice. However, if you’re an adrenaline junkie who likes to embarrass sports car owners away from the lights, get the R. You only live once, after all!"

Was out as a passenger in one of them last week as colleague just got one and its a really nice car and the hybrid is decent you stealthily creep around at a good pace in town and acceleration is decent too as he demonstrated BUT was not personally taken by the interior and as much as he loved the media/nav system it looked pretty average to me, and the timex center piece is pretty naff - Overall its a decent car and you would not be unhappy with performance, economy and style but did not leave me feeling that wanted one at all.
